3 years ago I bought my 05 Nissan X-trail with the QR25DE 4 cyl.
At that time I was informed in this site to use a conv. oil or syn oil on break-in, I chose conv. (today if I was doing it all over again I would use syn oil immediately)
My game plan was to use Esso XD3 HDEO 0-30syn oilfor life of vehicle. So I then chose the Esso 5-30 HDEO dino oil which then showed the spec of CH/SL on the label at my Bulk Esso outlet. In confidence, I bought this 5-30 XD3 dino for break-in purpose in keeping the same brand/add packs as the future 0-30 XD3. I changed the house oil at 400Km and put in the the 5-30
XD3, then again at 3000Kms, and then again at 5000 kms and ran 5-30 XD3 it to 10,000kms and then I put in my 0-30 XD3 and have used it since. Now at 40,000km my X-trail runs like swiss time piece.
In 05 I was posting my break-in procedure in this forum, a sharp poster informed me that Esso XD3 dino 5-30 was only SH rated on the Esso spec sheet, NOT SL as rated on my bottles' lables. I informed the Esso tech about this and he got a little excited and told me he would get the SL rating changed to the actual SH rating on the lables, I dont know if Esso changed future lables or not.
Any way, I cant go back and change things, my Nissan manual does allow the use of SH oil if newer updated oils are not available, that later gave me some comfort after using this SH oil in breaking. But, it still bothers me a bit. I am an Esso oil fan/user but Esso did lose a few points with me on that lable misinformation on their 5-30 XD3.
Apparently this QR25DE has chrome rings and are tough to break-in according to other Nissan owning posters in here. I drove normal through out break-in, my normal driving is respectful to a vehicle. Did I luck out using only a SH gas rated HDEO dino in break-in for first 10,000 kms or should it have been SL?
