I am reading in here that a CF/SH oil like 5-30 dino XD3 can actually have better wear additive packages in the SH formulation than SL rated oil? It is my my understanding in reading that SH oil was actually reduced in additives to prevent Cat Converter poisening, is this true?

thanks,
Cyprs

I believe the zddp part was reduced from SH levels for the SJ and SL and of course is reduced again for the new SM. There are supposed to be other additives to make up for the lower zddp. Also, the base oils used are generally better now. But a lot depends on what brand you buy.

If the application is an engine design, typical of older vehicles, with components exposed to a higher % of sliding friction, then the 1200 ppm ZDDP levels of SH/SJ oils may be beneficial.

But remember, reduced levels of ZDDP for SL and now SM, does not equal weak anti-wear performance. Many other additives are now providing AW protection in GF-4 oils. These oils must also pass the Sequence IIIG engine wear test which was upgraded from 80 to 100 hours.

Not exactly. ZDDP was not reduced as a response to Cat's failing from phosphorous poisoning.

It was reduced originally in response to environmental concerns and most recently as a safe guard for when the auto mfg's are required to warranty Cats for 120K miles.

I still would like to see some actual data that indicates how many quarts of SH/SJ oil, consumed during normal driving cycles,(is it 50 or 100?)would actually deactivate the catalyst.

Or, at normal addive depletion rates due to volatility, what levels of ZDDP, is it 2000 or 5,000 ppm, would be required to affect the Cat over 120K miles?

Thanks for the great answers guys, more than I expected. My 05 Nissan manual does allow API SH oil to be used, this CF/SH oil is XD3 Esso dino 5-30 and it may or may not be benificial for breakin but it is allowed according to Nissan. I will go to CI-4/SL XD3 0-30 syn oil right after this SH dino breakin.

Thanks guys,

Cyprs

Finally got your answer to the "SH/new truck OK" question

...I knew you were going to be allright..should buy your XD3 soon before it goes up

Thanks Greaser, great answers, valueable forum.

In another forum topic under "Japanese not happy with G4 oil" in here it appears this older rated SH oil is better for steel time chain lube too. I run SH oil in an 86 Accord for over 300K, cant be too bad an oil. Nissan tolerates SH in the new QR25DE. Will go to XD3 syn 0-30 after breakin though, yeah, got a flat of 0-30 I am burning to get into this new engine but wouldn't hurt to take advantage of pricing before increase.

Thanks Greaser,
Cyprs
