Replacing the Crumbling Continentals

The cooper discoverer AT/3 is easily cooper's best tire.

I'm not sure anything is immune to those conditions but I bet they would hold up a whole lot better against chunking.

I really like the yokohama geolandar g015 but I dont think they are ideal for your conditions.

Looks like surface erosion to me, so probably not dangerous. The carcase is probably still sound.

Yup all 4. My grandpa and I have taken it out to the desert lots of times, but I don't think they should have done this.

Discount Tire guy says he thinks it's called "delamination"

Not sure, I've never seen other tires do this.

Maybe CapriRacer will know

That's chip/chunk due to rough road usage. Looking the tire up on Tire Rack and they say "light duty" off road. What I see in the photos says the opposite. I don't think Conti is noted for their off road tires.

The heat in Phoenix will aggravate the situation.

So I think a different tire from a different category is needed - something with off road capability.

I've set up an appointment to have a set of Cooper Discoverer AT3's installed next Wednesday, the article AZjeff posted sold them!

I agree. If I was the owner, I would drive them until one pops or nearly pops. Might as well get the money worth out of them.

You missed the part where they are prorating them?

I'd say hes gotten the best part of their life and getting half the cost of oem tires $$$$ towards some considerably cheaper $$$ cooper AT/3 is WIN.

I almost went with AT3's for my truck, but did Hankook ATM's. Hoping to get them on in a few days. I'll be curious how the Coopers work out for you.

No, but I think what anyone would mean by light duty is a gravel driveway or an occasional unimproved road.

The good news is you're getting some compensation and have the opportunity to switch to something more appropriate. Based on the photos and your description of the service, you need an All Terrain.

Yeah I'm curious too, my Jeep has BFG All Terrains and in a few years when it's time for replacement, I'll know whether the Coopers are good or not. I love the BFGs though.

My favorite off-road tire is the BFG All Terrain, but they're almost $200 a piece, and I think they'd be overkill. But with the discount we'll have to see the prices.

I'd go with the Cooper tire. Here's a good site for tire reviews that seems pretty accurate.

Today the Continentals were replaced with a set of Cooper Discoverer AT3's. They pro-rated the tires and we got the Coopers for 50% off, or $68 per tire. Also there's a $30 rebate.

The Coopers are actually pretty quiet on the highway, only the slightest hum but the wind noise over powers it. Nice and smooth as far as vibrations.

But imperfections on the road are quite a bit more noticeable, they're definitely rougher on bumps and cracks in the road, this was to be expected though. It's just the trade off for having tires that will be tough enough for us.

Thanks for the recommendations guys.

Whats the air pressure in them?

I'd also let them "break in" for a few weeks and 500miles or so before forming any final opinions.

I'm about to replace the LX20's on my wife's Highlander this Saturday....with another set of the same. 61,000 miles. I highly recommend them.....except for gravels roads!
