Replaced the valve covers and intake gaskets on the Taurus a week ago. Changing the oil tonight and need help deciding. Should i run a short oci to flush contaminates or will draining this oil get rid of most of them?

You will need to run a VERY short OCI to get rid of most of the stuff. Even another reduced oil change after that is a good idea....

One more thing: if you are planning on a UOA, don't run an oil with a sodium additive. It makes the UOA harder to interpret.

That's just it i have VNG PP and QSUD. I'd hate to waste PP or QSUD on a short oci but the VNG uses sodium.

I replaced the timing cover on a 3.0 vulcan and changed the oil before, I started it up. I had water in the pan that was obvious as I began to loosen the drain plug for that first change before I started it. I ran that oil for maybe 20 miles of test drives, then changed it again. Now I will wait 1000 miles or so and change it one last time. I used a new filter each time, but you can save half a quart or so by only filling to the lower end of the dipstick.

Side note. After doing the work and filling with fresh oil, I started it up and it made a horrible clattering tapping noise that took a full minute or so of running to go away. Something with the lifters or such but it scared the HE!L out of me.

So, you changed the gaskets about a week ago, drove the car on that oil for a week, and now want to change it?

I think that sounds about perfect, actually. I'm no expert, but if it were me, I'd probably go to a normal oil change next.

If I made certain to keep everything clean, I'd run only a slightly shorter interval than normal. If there were problems, there would be other signs than Na in a UOA to help you figure it out.

Yep. This way I could flush as much as possible the first oci. Ill do 1 short oci then.

Here is a UOA without sludge: LINK

It looks like iron is almost 3x normal and copper is 15x normal.

In the grand scheme of things, that additional amount showing in the spectro is probably insignificant, IMO. Different strokes for different folks. I'd still run this interval shortly shorter, then normally there after.
