Replace one pair or shocks or wait to do all four?

If it's 4 standard shocks. I'd replace all at once. If it's a strut/shock situation, one type could fail faster than the other. I've replaced only the weak front struts when rear shocks felt strong as new.

If your front and rear suspensions are the same design, and have the same loadings, impacts etc...then they will all wear out about the same time.

If they are designed differently (and they are), they will wear as an axle set, not a car set.

Gross example, look at an old leaf sprung LandCruiser, versus an old leaf sprung Hilux. (Front axle)

Cruiser had the leaf spring pivot at the rear, Hilux at the front. Cruiser hits a pot-hole, and the car is trying to "pole vault" the spring, giving the shock a pizzling in rebound. Hilux, the wheel is "lifted", and the shock gets a fairly mild compressive load.

Both had similar rear arrangements, but vastly different actions on the shocks.

I would wait and do both. You are going to need an alignment after replacing anything shock/strut/spring related so why not get an alignment once instead of once for the front and another for a rear

It doesn't matter if you'll be replacing the other two in a few months...

I replaced the LR shock on my '98 Grand Marquis that was defective when I bought it in '10 with 33K mi on the clock... Still haven't replaced RR but did repl the front pair last year... Has now just crossed 60K mi, rides and drives fine...

Why would you say that? I replaced my shocks and struts on my car and 5 months later my tires were almost bald. It was decided that the alignment needed to be adjusted due to the shocks and struts. Not arguing but I was told it was a rule of thumb to do it due to the changes in ride height etc.

Struts are different story. He said there is no need to do alignment after a shock replacement and he is right.

On the Suburban, getting an alignment because it has new shocks would be like getting an alignment because it has a new seatbelt retractor. One thing has nothing to do with the other.
