If heard of people tying the engine to the frame in some fashion as a cheap fix. Such as a couple bolts and a turn buckle.

Just suggestions if money is really tight.

With bad mounts the engine can jump around a lot. This can wreak havoc on hoses and wiring. It can strees them big time. Also, so many vehicles these days have wring and hoses that run close to pulleys. If the engine moves and you end up with a pulley rubbing a hose or a wire harness.... Well then not replacing the mounts just cost you quite a bit more money.

With car repairs the old addage still holds true. Pay some now and fix the problem or pay a whole lot more later to fix the problem and everything else that was caused by the problem.

It's unlikely that driving around with a worn or slightly broken motor mount is going to do any damage.

My mom drove my previous Saturn for more than 5 years and 40,000 miles with a broken upper mount and I never found any evidence that it caused other damage.

money-wise, $850 is 2-3 car payments. If it gets you 2-3 months of life out of the car, you have broken even. value-wise, I've always thought those luminas were terrific vehicles. I recall they came 2nd to volvo that year in crash safety, with the subaru legacy next in line. My buddy had a 96 lumina, got rear-ended hard at a red light... knocked him 6 feet into the intersection. no frame damage. solid car, drove GREAT, especially for a fwd.

I may be snobbish, but if a car isn't worth repairing properly, I don't think it's worth keeping, and should be replaced.

If you can't get a lower quote for the rear valve cover gasket, just leave it and get the motor mount fixed. Unless the motor is really dripping oil. My Neon has a few seeps and it doesn't seem to matter at all, but YMMV...
