rental car and accident

Hertz daily rental insurance is the same cost as the rental. So, if you want the insurance, it doubles the cost.

I've been lucky I guess. Rented hundreds of times. Never had a crash or anything else.. I guess you could say I "self insure". I treat the rental car like it was my own.

I may be crazy, but 2x the cost just isn't worth it to me. I recently switched to AAA car insurance (from Farmers), I'm going to have to look at the policy to see what the coverage is for rentals.

I make sure to use a credit card that covers my deductible....and have called my insurance company to make sure I'm covered. If I ever get into an accident, there will be $0 paid by me.

Rental car insurance is a bit tricky. Each state is different, but, most personal auto insurance policies will only cover a rental vehicle when the policy holders vehicle is in a shop for repairs, so if you are renting a vehicle for business or pleasure, and not as a result of your vehicle being in the shop I highly recommend getting insurance. Be careful here read the policy on what is covered and what isn't, DO NOT trust what the rental place employee says, they are not experts and are there just to pad the bill as much as they can to make their numbers (quota). Loss of Use (LOU) is bs, its something that rental companies add to make money, some states allow LOU some don't. When I was handling subrogation demands for an insurance company I always denied LOU, and very rarely did the rental companies push to Arbitration. Enterprise was the worst, basically what rental car companies do is throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.

Yep. Read and ask questions. Insurance may not cover the loss of rental income the company will charge you plus loss of value. As noted above, Enterprise/National are the worst.

Take videos of the walk around and be very thorough on any scratch or dent n

The daily insurance coverages are usually at least twice the cost of the rental daily rates ( it's how they turn a profit!).
Which is why so many simply take the risk and go with CC coverage.

Your insurance company(if you have full coverage) tells them eloquently to pound sand.

Up here at least, last time I "rented" was when I had been in a collision that wasn't my fault, and my package policy provided me with a free rental for the duration of repairs. The rental company did not make any insurance upsells, which would indicate to me they already have that arranged with SGI, the insurer here, in that type of case. With an ordinary rental, my credit card has the coverage.
