Remove GAS at Scrader Valve

Good morning,
Looking for some advice:

To run portable generator during power outage:
If I want to remove gasoline from fuel tank of my 02 Ford Ranger,
I have been hearing that most vehicles can not be siphoned from fill tube.

I would rather 'not' disturb the fill tube & clamp at tank.

This would mean removing gas at schrader valve on fuel rail.

I have a fuel pressure gauge that screws onto schrader valve.
So I can see what kind of fitting & hose I would need.

Questions:
1) Is this praticle ?
2) How long would it take to fill 5 gallon can (at 60 PSI)?
3) Could I possible over-heat fuel pump ?

This would only be done in extreme emergency (so maybe never).
I just like to be prepared.

Yeah you can do it.

Thinking it over, I would use a tire valve core tool ($2) to pull the valve core, then stuff a hose over the threaded barb. Snug is fine, it won't blow off.

You want to find your fuel pump relay and figure out how to jumper it. Preferably not throwing sparks if you have fuel on your hands. Maybe jumper a switch with two wires coming out of it so you can switch the switch at will. Some cars make it super easy with a "fuel pump test port" that you just have to shove 12 volts into.

If you have GM style quick releases on your fuel filters with the "smooth nipples" that's another great place to tap.

Your pump won't burn out, it runs all the time anyway. Just monitor it so it doesn't RUN out. You should be paying half attention anyway. It'll start sounding different when it gets down to fumes, that would be a good time to run over and shut it down. Realistically you want to leave a gallon in anyway so you can drive to a gas station at the end of the crisis.

I've done it to drain junk cars before sending them to the yard and I'd say 15 minutes for 5 gallons.

Your Ranger probably has Ford quick disconnect fittings somewhere near where the fuel lines connect to the fuel rail / injection manifold.

Easiest way to drain the tank is to unhook these, run some rubber hose into a gas can, and use a jumper (big paperclip) in place of the fuel pump relay.

IIRC, it took about ten minutes to fill a five gallon can this way from my wife's Windstar... your Ranger should be in the same ballpark. I took a break between each can to let it cool off.

If you're planning to do this in an emergency, I'd suggest a practice run. The Ford QD fittings can be tricky! Go to an auto parts store and get one of the quick disconnect release tool sets.

I would:

1) Try it before you need to do it.
2) Have 5 gallons of gas so you can wait until its light to try this.
3) Have a fire extinguisher close by.
4) Don't smoke.

Should be fine. But as others said, I'd recommend using the feed line right off the fuel rail. Disconect the fuel feed, you can buy metal fittings that have the same type of connection as your fuel rail, so it can clip in properly, they're cheap. Then just run the hose into your can,a nd presto.


A friend did something similar for his track cars. He took a used fuel pump relay, disassemble dit, and wired a switch into it. Basically just jumpered the relay INSIDE the relay, ran 2 wires out of the relay and mounted a switch on the outside of it. So, just yank your normal fuel pump relay, install this, and when you want fuel - flip the switch.
