I own a 2004 Mazda Tribute 3.0L that has no serviceable trans filter. So I added a simple remote inline oil filter. And was a little shocking of how much it improved drivabilty.
It went from sloppy and converter shudder at times to seamless and positive engagement on acceleration.

Total cost of parts 18.40 (employee price)

i have thought about instaling an external filter but to be honest i just dont know where to start, where to bolt the mount and etc... ____ i drive a yota.. i dont need one haha

I'm struggling with why a filter would do this..... I'm all for the filter, don't get me wrong, but immediate shifting improvement is not on the usual feature list. Did you change ATF? Top it up nicely?

Maybe increase line pressure? I've got a trans filter setup on my car, but I never noticed a difference in shift quality...

I was working at a Ford/Mazda dealership when I purchased the Tribute and got to see a number for these with problems due to sludge, ferrous material and other wear debris. Seemed that mercon / dex III would degrade rather quickly. With a fresh fluid exchange, crisp tight shifting was noticed to start lag off within about three to four months.

But!! the transmission was not that bad! for example, My girl friend drives my car now and then and she thinks its perfect!!! But we Men know our vehicles for those who are not the gas-n-go types. Try explaining converter shudder to a woman...
No offense mikeg5

And yes Pablo I had a flush done about a year and half ago so all I did after the filter install was top off the mercon and did a five minute battery disconnect cycle. The trans adapts to driving style along with conditionals. So I ask it to relearn after I do anything with the trans....

Suspended wear will affect the feel of the transmisson. Catching all that wear can make a difference in shift feel and TC lockup.

If the filter made that much of a difference, a flush would be in order.

If you're using cheap Mercon/Dexron, and don't want to upgrade to something better, you should consider a transmssion protectant like lubegard or smartblend.

IMO, all transmissions including Toyotas, can benefit from an ATF filter. An easy splice in unit, like the magnefine or equivalent, can be installed anywhere there is a run of ATF hose. The canned filter kits, like BM or Permacool, will need a place to mount the PH8a sized filter along with appropriate hose runs.

I tried to explain that its not that dramatic. Seems with this Ford trans, converter shudder seems to be normal. But you know being a guy.. I like it better when shes tight and
fells like I'm going to get as many miles as I can. The cost to benefit is in my favor. Guess I miss working on my fixerupers!!

Yeah I know right? Except that Ford along with the engineers
who designed the transmission have again and again stated to use ONLY Mercon. Reasoning that any type of synthetic would cause
problems with clutch pack synchronization and the self learning systems... In all premature failure is what they meant.
