I remember chevron oil on sale @ Kragen for $.49 a qt
You just reminded me of the days I worked the parts counter at Napa and had 4 ft of catalogs to look up part numbers. No computers for part look ups. This when a 5001 headlight box sat with dust on the shelf as everyone were replacing with H5001.

Yes Chevron oil, I likely bought 20W-50 for my '69 Datsun 510.

that's nothing

I went to 2 Walmart stores this morning in my area and oil up on the shelves was in very short supply, only two brands pretty much carried 0W-20 grade; no Mobil1 at all

its crazy out there

Scarcity works well in favor of our corporate overlords. Just watch, from now on, they're going to stock the shelves with the bare minimum while maximizing pricing, and people will sell their firstborn to buy the basics.

Quietly yearning for what we don't have while dreading losing what we do is how they get us.

Pepperidge farm remembers
Remember those sweet, warm New England summers? Remember sipping lemonade underneath a shady tree? Remember when you hit that pedestrian with your car at the crosswalk and then just drove away? Pepperidge Farm remembers, but Pepperidge Farm ain't just gonna keep it to Pepperidge Farm's self free of charge. Maybe you go out and buy yourself some of these distinctive Milano cookies, maybe this whole thing disappears...

Wanted to run my Insignia with its 50% of a Duramax 3.0 on Mobil1 0w40 ESP X3 for its duration with me. The first 5 litre jug I bought back in October or November cost me £32. Cheapest I can find it now is £44.

Not quite sure what's going on.

When the chicken meat yields between your molars as if it wasn't there, you know you got "confinement raised chicken".
I consume animal tissue but I won't subsidize animal torture Think veal.

simple_gifts: Once I recall how many syllables are in a Haikou (and how many lines are allowed) I want to rewrite your post. It's good.

In 1999 I could get full synthetic 5w30 from Walmart for $3/qt. Of course it was M1 and probably the good stuff with esters.

Now 22 years later you can still get full synthetic 5w30 but now it's $3.07/qt and "only" group 3.

I'm making 3x the hourly wage I did back then.

What is expensive about $15 per 5 qt jug of synthetic? Yes I bought two boxes of it for the 24 or 22 don't remember if I got the sale, probably. WM has all kinds of oil at prices lower than before, and some higher than before, just like always it goes. Edge for $20-21, it used to be more. That's still 40-42 compared to Costco 30. Costco at 30 with no rebate is a heck of a good price.
It is the stores making the prices. If they can get more they try, if not they put it on sale. It's not like they follow what their cost is and are good samaritans about lowering prices for your benefit.
