Relief valves necessary?

These 2 filters are for a Toyota 1mz-fe. 1 has a relief valve and the other doesn't. Is the relief valve necessary?

I'd have to challenge the one that you say has no bypass valve.I would by one and cut it apart to verify...it must have one!

The pureone site says it doesn't have one. Click on the specifications link on the bottom of the page. It says relief psi NONE.

Or are you picking an oversized option?
What year and model?

Bypass valve is necessary if engine doesn't have one built in!

The pl10241 is the recommended size the other is an oversize. 2000 Toy Avalon 3.0L 1mz-fe engine.

You risk breaching the media in certain circumstances. It's probably a very rare occurance ...but

If the engine doesn't have one, the oil filter should.

T-Kieth has the correct answer.

Without a by-pass you risk reduced oil flow under certain conditions and finally a collapsed element if the pressure becomes to great--within the filter. Once the oil filter collapses you no longer have a flow problem through the element but then again you have no filtering...and you won't know until you remove the filter to check.

Well, I checked and the Toyota oil pump does have a bypass valve as does a Toyota filter.

Why would a current Pure One filter NOT have a bypass valve?

I looked up applications (136) for the PL24457 and most of them were Nissans, Suburus and VW. No Toyotas.

PL24457 does not appear to be for Toyota applications.

PL10241 is used for some Lexus and Toyota applications.

The statement that these "2 filters are for a Toyota 1mz-fe" does not appear to be correct.

PL10241 is the correct filter for a 1mz-fe, and in common with all Toyota filters, it has a bypass valve.

You are using the WRONG oversized option.
Do NOT use the filter without a bypass.
Who recommended that filter size?

Some OEM's have their cars with the pressure relief valve built into the engine block and that is why some filters are manufactured without one.

It's is best to always verify how the OEM filter is constructed and choose your replacement filter accordingly.

WRONG, WRONG, WRONG.

The oil pump has a pressure control valve. It limits the max oil pressure the pump puts out. Any excess oil is dumped back to the sump.

The oil filter (or the filter mount on GM engines) has a high differential pressure bypass valve. If the pressure differential between the filter inlet and the filter outlet exceeds the limit, the oil is sent to the engine unfiltered.

NOTE THAT THE FILTER BYPASS VALVE SENDS OIL TO THE ENGINE...THE OIL PUMP PRESSURE CONTROL VALVE DUMPS OIL TO THE SUMP.

Thanks Ken2, You are correct. I took another look at the manual and what I saw was called a "relief valve".
It's depicted on page 4 here.

It's for a tacoma but is identical to the one pictured in the avalon manual.

I've replaced the filter; thanks to all for your assistance and information. This is a great site.
