Reliable water pump brands?

Once again it’s a cat’s breakfast of varying advice from the Bitog team.
NOS? If anyone believes that no improvement in manufacturing has occurred in the last ten years, hopefully grandpa has water pump stashed in the attic.

So you think Delco is still producing parts in the USA today for almost 30 year old cars? Sure manufacturing has changed, most parts for older cars are now made in China and not necessarily to a high quality standard but to a lower price point eg GM OE hydraulic engine mounts for W cars were high quality made in USA, today they are GM branded made in China and much lower quality.
The seals in modern water pumps are a part of a cartridge and not subject to UV or aging and are made with composite materials like Viton, FKM, etc.

Nope. Not at all. I said there is an improvement in the AC Delco water pumps made in in China in the last ten years. I keep hearing complaints that are based on Chinese made parts made over 10 years ago. Many mechanics say “ I’ll never use that Chinese crap again.” That’s based on parts made prior to 2015. What’s happened? Chinese manufacturing got into gear and quality is climbing. China makes three times more vehicles than the USA and they are learning a few things. Remember when Japanese parts were crap?

Gotta keep those old Cavaliers running! I'm inclined to lean towards OEM when it comes to water pumps. My Cavalier is an ecotec, but I put an aftermarket water pump on it and it didn't last a super long time. So after that one I found a deal on an OEM one from Amazon I think. I'm disappointed to see that Rock Auto doesn't have an OEM option. ACDelco Gold isn't quite it. This one maybe?

Give it a shot but 99% chance its a crap part in a nice AC Delco box

You are going off track here. Sure there are some decent quality Chinese made parts but GM OE spec parts are a different quality than the Gold and Silver lines. Those lines are made to a lower price point. The Delco OE part from a dealer is a higher end part than aftermarket Delco despite both possibly being made in the same place regardless of COO.

That’s all fair enough. The Gold line replaced the Professional line, and this was done less than 10 years ago so even they are better than the old AC Delcos prior to 2015. My Professional line AC Delco water pump has 50,000 miles on it. Like you said, I’ll bet the Delco OE is even better, but I would have no problem purchasing an AC Delco Gold water pump, even if made in China. If one is worried about call backs, then yes you might suggest OE.

Remember when anything made in Japan was crap? Over the years my family has had a few decorative items "made in occupied Japan". Not great quality.

When Japanese cars first arrived in Canada (Honda products, about 1968), Japanese stuff had come off its "going to be bad" reputation but still wasn't considered any better than "made in Great Britain". At that time "made in USA" was the gold standard for quality. But times change.

I thought those tiny Hondas were the real deal. But then again I was a big fan of Triumph TR-4As, and Corvairs too. Practicality and reliability weren't yet part of my decision-making.

Was restoring 2 old Toyota's. 2AZ-FE - 4 bangers in them. Checked the OE pumps, had a tinge of play and no resistance left in them. Time to go bye bye. Not hard to access. Checked OEM prices. Nearly had a heart attack. Did my homework. Took hours to accomplish. Finally came across a winner. GMB. A lot of manufacturers use them as OEM today. They've been the engines for years now. No problems....and they won't break the bank either.

oh ya Toyota had a parts recall (under the guise of a service bulletin) for many of those 2AZ-FE engine water pumps. I know, I had mine replaced under warranty. The bearing wasn't sealed against coolant and it caused the shaft to wobble. It's probably why you had a little bit of play and no resistance. They replaced all those parts with newer designs around 2007-2008. But that's good to know there's at least ONE decent aftermarket manufacturer of water pumps out there!

Engineers are looking to improve an existing design of a 10, 20 etc. year old platform? Lol okay.

I bought a NOS/ factory original part for my blazer 5 years ago. Old package. US made. It’s been fine. If you want to flip a 2 headed coin while betting tails with a chong wang doo branded thing, by all means. 👍

Whew !!! Good to know..... The Toyota's are 03' & 06'...Glad I inspected them. Thanks for the heads up :).....Yeah, GMB has served me well, and they come with gaskets !!! No RTV needed... Toyota OEM is strickly RTV for their water pumps.
I do remember the Toyota pump needed that FIPG sealant. And yup 06 that's the same year as mine, gave up within the warranty. New one supposed to last a long, long time, so far, so good.

Buy what you're wallet lets you buy. The GMB's weren't all that cheap, not no $ 29 pump. All I can say is that they worked for me, and Chinese quality has come up. I mean, lets face it, they have the world by the short hairs now. Manufacturing of car parts is not coming back to USA, unless you need a set of Weather Tech Floor Mats. That ship sailed with Jimmy Carter & Ronald Reagan, along with millions of jobs.

The GMB for those cars seems to be made in Japan. GMB makes water pumps in Japan, Thailand, South Korea, and China.

From what Rock Auto has for those cars, Aisin or Graf would also be worth considering. Aisin is Toyota's OE supplier for those pumps.

FWIW, I’ve installed a Chinese WP in an 4.0L Explorer. No issues, this was 10 years ago. It still works.

If it’s Chinesium, it’s worth paying the FLAPS premium for the “warranty”.
