I own a 2001 Sunfire 2.2 OHV that has a bad piston slap when put into gear. Even on cold starts she doesn't slap until I put it under load.

Ive done my research and people are saying oil with moly can help a piston slap. Would redline 5w30 be my best bet? Im not exactly to worried about the price..a 50$ oil change would be worth it if I could completely mask that problem...

Ive tried using thick oil, i added Mobil 1 5w30 with a whole bottle of Lucas..bad idea..sounded like a diesel haha...Right now has in synpower 5w30, but still is loud and annoying..

Any suggestions?

Id try that or the lubromoly MOS2 treatment. Different types of moly, but the LM may be worth a shot first since it could be a cheaper fix.

I dont know if thats slap. IN fact I doubt it. It would slap out of gear. May be a main or rod shot. Or a broken torque converter ear or a drivetrain mount. Slap should go away HOT unless the pistin ir CYL is well damaged/worn. Trying to sell it? Dont waste $$$ on redline - try Rotella T triple protect 10w30. That is a quieting oil and not a lot of bucks.

Typically piston slap is louder under load, which the vehicle would be when in gear vs. out.

That is unlikely to be slap. I'm betting broken flex plate.

And take it from a guy who at one time had a whole fleet of 'slappers'. It's not louder under load.

That would mean your engine is toast.

Every GM slapper I've heard gets louder under load. I doubt every one also happened to have a broken flex plate for many years without issue.

louder under load-once again, is not piston slap--you have another problem, what that is, no one is sure, they are just trying to give you siggestions

My 1995 Grand Prix with 120K miles on it has pretty bad slap, sounds like a diesel on first start. it doesn't really get louder under load, it does change pitch a little bit. It's loudest on chilly mornings.

Here is what I have noticed with my 3.1 Buick:

Soon after I bought this car, I switched to synthetic oil for 3 OCIs. It was Castrol Syntec 5w30, then Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w30, then Rotella T6 5w40. With each of these oils in sump, it slapped very distinctly after cold startup. Bothered me a lot.

Then I switched to conventional (SuperTech, mix of 5w30 and 15w40). Not immediately, but after 3k miles, the slap is almost gone. It became almost unnoticeable.

So I fugured, it's no brainer, I'll proceed with dino. Not sure how, but it seems to help.
