This is just results from my own personal experience with fuel additives. The one that has sold me is the one from Redline. I noticed a difference on the first treatment. This was in a 95 Toyota 22RE. First time you use a whole bottle as was the instructions on the bottle. And as it said might happen, the truck was a bit sluggish. After 1st treatment tank was finished you use about 3oz per tank as maintance. I went from 18 mpg to 24 mpg in 3-4 tanks. Seemed to get a little better each fillup. And it has been very consistant. Techron was ok while it was in the tank but after a while mileage went back to 18-19 mpg. Same with the Berryman 12. For me and this particular engine I will stay w/Redline. Although I am very interested in this Fuel Power I see everyone talking about. The Redline is also cheaper, except for the Berryman 12. I also have some BK44 but am undecided yet about using it. Well, I can say I have tried almost all of them at some point. The various OTC products, Techron, Amsoil, Neutra and FP. I can honestly say in my opinion in a well operating engine that is basically clean, I have seen no perceptible difference in anything. If the engine seems smoother etc it is probably wishful perception not fact and after several weeks of usage the reality usually sets in. Few, very, very, very few, additives actually show a difference in performance and those that do are usually associated with an engine that has been somewhat neglected for a while. Do I continue to use gas additives, yep, Amsoil PI and Neutra primarily but I am not sure exactly why as all others I work with etc use plain ole gas and the engines also run fine. Perception can become reality especially in the additive world.
I hate to say it but that drastic of a change didn't come simply by some small containers dumped in the fuel tank. I'm not saying the products mentioned are bad or good, nor am I saying they didn't help (a little).
Here's what helped:
Change over to summer fuel (good for 2 mpg for me)
Auto-Rx
Several rapid oil changes (cleaning)
Synthetic oil continues clean
Fuel injection cleaner
Other unmentioned tweaking and monitoring
More careful driving
Increased tire pressure (heat and checking)
Wishing and hoping
18 up to 24 mpg is a HUGE percentage change and unless you cured a mechanical problem I doubt an in the tank additive did it alone.

If the injectors were coked up and the intake valves were loaded up, I could see it happening
I have to say, I have had good experience with it too. Been using it for the past year. Just changed my intake manifold gasket and there was not a single hint of a deposit on any intake valve. Engine has 177k miles and is notorious for intake deposits, but maybe my driving style prevents them from forming also

I don't think Redline's SI1 is a miracle in a bottle, but I only offer this as experience.
At one point our family owned two nearly identical 2001 4Runners with the 3.4L v6. Had to sell mine since I was laid off... Both ran on 87 octane and both were filled up over 90% of the time from the same Mobil station. I used the SI1 in a maintenance dose from about the 2nd or 3rd fillup. The other Runner didn't get anything at all.
Occassionally when I would borrow the 'other' truck I noticed that at idle (when warm) it had a bit of vibration or shudder which could be felt in the steering column. I noticed it immediately since my truck didn't do it. The 'other' truck had only about 13k on it at this time.
I bought two bottles of SI1 and used a full bottle at the next fillup, I put the other bottle in the truck and my father made a good effort to regularly put the maintenance dose in the tank at every fillup.
Long story short, no more shudder at idle when warm. Due to this good experience, we use the product in all our gassers. Our '95 Volvo Turbo is just beginning its 'treatment.'

I can only report the results that I'm experiencing at each fillup. The only changes that I've done are the Auto RX and switched to the Redline 10W30 oil and gear oils. Nothing mechanically. I check the mileage on each fillup and these are the results. I've tried the different oils and additives and these are the ones that have made a difference in my truck.
I've been using Redline SI for a couple of months now... I haven't noticed a mileage change on my Sienna, other than the increase going to summer fuel.
But this is what I am now doing, and is my logic sound? Since the SI is my "detergent," I now shop for the lowest-price gasoline (from stations that do high volumes), rather than by brand-preference. Each fill-up, I save a few cents per gallon, which covers the cost of the Reline maintenance dose.
