Redline MT-90 Experiences

Over the summer I am replacing the clutch on my 1999 Hyundai Elantra. Thinking of putting Redline MT-90 gear oil into the trans. What are people's experiences with this stuff?

I'm running it in my Toyota Tercel. No miracles, but it does shift a little easier. I like it, and intend to use it again for my next fill.

I used MTL in a Suzuki Swift and was great. Check with Redline and see if the recommend the lighter stuff as it will protect well and give a minor economy boost to boot.

Yeah, I use MTL in my MINI Cooper S and it definitely made a noticeable improvement in shifting. I would think the Hyundai would use the lighter of the two oils.

I know guys who use it in their Tacoma trannys and say its the best they every used.

VW people use it a lot, sometimes in a 50/50 mix with Redline MTL if they live in a climate with cold winters.

Having had both MT-90 and mostly Amsoil MTG in my maxima 5 speed transmission, I can say that in sub freezing temps, as the RL warmed up, it went through a transition where it was impossible to select any gears without grinding them. It would start smooth as a baby's bottom, go through this notchy spot and then at operating temps, settle somewhere in between (as somebody said before, no miracle but still better than the OEM fluid). Also, MT-90 eventually dried up the cheapo Nissan seals and started a slow leak. I solved both issues by replacing the fluid with a ~4:1 blend of Amsoil MTG and Sta-Lube 80W90 dino. The home made blend revived the seal in six months and the shifts are better than with MT-90, no matter the ambient temp.

Most but not all transmission like a 50/50 mix of MTL/MT-90 if they usualy use a GL4 or GL5 gear oil. This is especialy the case in winter time. I have 1 quart MTL to 2 quarts Mt-90 in my 2003 Toyota Camry. It shifts nice and smooth even dureing the winter. I was too cheap to have an extra quart of MTL just lying around wich is why I did it the way I did. It is much better then the OEM fluid or the Royal Purple MaxGear I tried. My car's trans can use GL4 or GL5 and just about anything from a 70W to a 140W wich makes life easy! SOme vechiles are super picky about viscosity. All of the fluids shifted fine warm but cold they each had their own feel. The Redline has been the best to date and seems to last. The RP Maxgear lost it's cold shift properties after about 10,000 miles.

RP Maxgear is closer to a staight 90w if you look at their specs, around 144 cSt at 40 degrees. I use a mixture of it and their Sychromax and it shifts great but still not the best when cold.

I use MT90 in my 2006 Corolla, works great, is a GL-4 75W-90 which is what is recommended and I see no reason to mix it with anything else.

I use Redline MT-90 in quite a few of my cars...great stuff year round.

I also like Redline MTL and 75W-90NS in the cars that spec those fluids!

Redline makes good products, IMHO. Some of the best out there!

In that range I use the Dodge OEM fluid in a NV4500 5 sp tranny, which is Castrol SynTorq, a GL4 85W90. It works well enough, kind of sluggish below freezing where deliberate shifting is needed, but no grinding. The following thread has as good of a summary on the stuff as I've run across.
