I just bought a 1991 M-B 500SL. I've used Redline oil and transmission fluids for several years in my BMWs and my Honda. I changed the oil + filter myself with Redline 10-40 and Mann filter. I bought D4 for the transmission and took it to a Mercedes independent to get the transmission fluid / filter changed. He won't use the D4- he said he used it once in a BMW 5 series and the trans went out in a week. He said he had to replace the trans because of it. I've used D4 in my Civic. D4 is the recommended fluid on the Redline website. He says only Pentosin in a Mercedes. Have you ever heard of any problems with D4?

Thanks

My opinion is that the guy doesn't know what he is talking about. Was that transmission the one and only Mercedes transmission that ever went out anywhere in the world? Are they so bullet proof and indestructible that he could tell from just one experience that it was Redlines D4 that caused the problem?

I did an application search on Redline's website for your vehicle (as you probably did) and it showed D4 as a recommendation.

Well, I guess my 4R70 is also doomed too then, I have about 60K on a D4 fill now. D4 will be going back in again when I change again shortly. Doomed I guess.

The probable truth is that there were transmission problems, and he used this good fluid to overcome them.
Well... the trans went out anyways, and he of course blamed the fluid.

I'm using it with good results right now in a GM trans that spec.'d Dex III originally. 4T65E. I think it is a good fluid, probably a very good fluid, which is why I'm using it.

Ive had good luck with it in other cars. I"m going to go ahead and put it in the Mercedes.
