I got a new battery from Walmart a while back. I picked it up from a parking space, and it started just fine, so I didn't think I needed to look it over. Famous last words, I know...

I was looking under the hood today and saw a reddish substance that was coming from near the terminals (both of them), and it appears to have seeped to the other side of the battery. You can see here in the pic.

Is something that indicates a problem?

You picked up the car, not the battery, from a parking space, right? If so, it appears that the installer sprayed the terminals with battery protector or covered them with grease. It could also be grease coming from the felt pads.

Yes, I picked up the car, and it started, so I figured they didn't push a problem car out of a bay into the lot. So it started just fine twice, and has done so without incident since then.

They worked on your car. They finished and you paid the bill. They gave you the keys and you went into the parking lot to go on your way?

All that "I picked up the car" repetition read oddly.

The corrosion spray I've bought over the years comes in red, green and purple.

I make a masking hole in paper and spray the post. After attaching the cables' terminals I make another mask (to limit overspray) and cover the terminals.

The stuff lasts for years.

I was clarifying to rhymingmechanic that it was the car that I picked up in the parking space, not the battery itself. Should have quoted him, but oh well.

So this new battery was in the parking lot? Kind of like something falling off the back of a truck way back when.

So it’s not new.

That's right. I use this on my batteries as well.

Think the CRC spray is red ?

Add me to the list.

Agreed. Same thing on my dad's Subaru from the factory, and the dealer used it when they replaced the battery. Seems to work because those terminals stay clean.

Looks like a proper, professional install to me. Adding the spray is a nice touch. I own and use the CRC spray, and it looks identical to yours.
