Dell 537 was getting "Unmountable_Boot_Error and Status 79 during a self test. Dell is sending a new hard drive. Put the Dell drive as a secondary hard drive in my Acer, but will not allow me to access the drive. It says I have to format it first. I just put another hard drive as the secondary driver with no problem accessing the information on the drive. At this point, is there another way to get some files off the bad drive? I was told there were some letters that need to be recovered if possible. She may willing to pay someone if that is the only option on recovering the data.

Use a linux live cd to boot from and you should be able to access it. Linux live cd's are a must in a geek tool-kit

Good luck with that, I had the same problem a while back. I could not figure out how to access it. I tried the Linux live CD (I run linux so I have the CDs) and it did not work. I gave up an reformatted it. All I want to know is why did the HD do it in the first place.

GetDataBack For Fat and NTFS. This program will recover data if the drive will still spin.

Tried to install Linux Live, then Knoppix 6.2. Could not get through all the commands. I put in a trusty Ubuntu 9.10 in try without installing mode. Told me one drive was probably failing. However, I could see My Documents. Copying to flash now. Thanks!
