Hi All,

Need to change the oil in my mothers car and she has an Audi A6 with the 2.7t engine. the handbook recommends a 5w30, but I haven't seen many that meet the VW 502 spec. Any help would be much appreciated.

I did a search for Audi and nothing conclusive came back

thanks,

rob

The VW502.00 spec is more important than the actual grade. If you want something that can be easily found at a local store, try Mobil 1 0w-40.

GC 0w30 would also be good, but it may be a bit harder to find, depending on your particular location. Check AutoZone or PepBoys.

Thanks for the replies.

In regards to the Mobil 1 0w-40, are there any used oil analysis that have been done on the 2.7T?

Thanks for the reply. I'll try to stock up when I get some.

How about for the 2.0T FSI? I just bought an 07 A4 and its looking for a 5w-40 weight. I am guessing GC would also work for that, but I'll run the car harder. How about Rotella in that weight?

EDIT: It's a shame the search sucks so badly. I'm sure we have a lot more there somewhere.

Wait. What "handbook" calls for 5w30? In most cases any reference to 5w30 in a European car actually means a heavier Euro 5w30. VW 502 reference charts are numerous and confusing, plus there are errors. Normally, any 5w-40 is a a great choice in a Euro car that needs synthetic oil. For colder temps, 5w-40 is actually somewhat thick, even for a normal engine. Early 2.7tt engines had relatively small oil lines to the K-03 turbos. That was corrected later on.

Still, I feel 5w-40 is to thick in winter and in your case, too thick unless your mom is some crazy Autobahn Baroness. See, that grade is for crusing at 130 mph all day, not cold starting to run out 2 blocks for some cocoa in New England winter. This is especially if she does not observe proper warm-up.

So, that takes us back to actual viscosity at start and operating temps. A 0w-40 like m1 and a 0w30 like GC are good, but I think you can even go thinner, back to thin American 5w30 like Pennzoil Platinum....the thinnest of the bunch! If you like PP in winter, then maybe go with another Shell product, Rotella T 5w-40 for summer and do only 2X a year changes. Trust me.

btw- I've see a great UOA on Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 in a Audi 1.8t, fwiw.

It's a tossup, I like GC. If I had a FSI engine, I'd get some RLI 5w-40. I'd avoid Syntec 5w-40 as well as any 30 weight other than GC in that engine, MaxLife Synthetic excluded. Rotella would be a great DIY oil if you are doing 5k w/o testing. You can't go thin in that engine because of the fuel dillution. The latest VW 504/507 oils are Euro 30 weights, but I'd feel more comfortable with 5w-40, especially Rotella or RLI.

Some reference on FSI...

I'd use Castrol GC or Mobil 1 0w40, but if you're forced to go 5w30 for warranty, Schaeffer's 9000 might be VW502 spec, you'd have to check their site. Redline too is supposed to be a good 5w30 that might also meet the spec.
Let us know what you find!

Thanks for all the input. Since my mom's car is mostly around town and not the Autobahn baroness, I'll get some GC for her car.

I've read the used oil analysis on the RLI and it sounds promising for my 2.0T. Probably not going to long OCI's until I get some good results with it.

thanks,

rob
