Recommendations for a high-mileage EA827 burning oil?

The car in question is a 2001 Škoda Octavia (Golf Platform) that was seemingly neglected by its previous owner.
Given the age of the car, 250,000 km (155,000 Miles) isn't a lot, but despite that I've noticed it burning oil, having a gasoline smell from the dip stick and some sand textured residue under the oil fill cap.
The atrocious state of the car aside, my question is if there is anything special I should consider or ways I could improve the fuel use of a couple of hundred ml on a few thousand kilometers. Or if it's best to just stick with a somewhat reputable VW. 502 00.

The engine in question is the "AQY" EA827. 8 Valves, timing belt driven SOHC, no VVT, nothing.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I have had that engine in a few cars. Worn VITON valve stem seals always cause high consumption and a blue smoke screen under certain conditions. That happens every 50k to 70k km. On this 8-valver the valve job is neither extensive nor expensive. The basic design of that engine is now over 50 years old. Upgraded valve stem seals may be available.

Ideally VW 502 00 AND MB 229.5 AND BMW LL-01 (and maybe Porsche A40).
That said anything VW 504 00 AND MB 229.51(52) AND BMW LL-04 (and maybe
Porsche C30) would be fine too, but these are XW-30 and I'd prefer some 5W-40
in your particular case. Proper oil (with true approvals, not just "recommended
for") are commonly between 30 and 40 Euros for a 5 l jug. Just do a Google search.
