Recommendation For An Oil Filter Cutter

I'm giving this one a try:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09XW9NK2Z/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

it looks a little more substantial than the $19 ones and has Prime shipping, so it's supposed to come tomorrow. Of course it's chineseium, but if it meets my relatively modest needs, that's fine.

I have a Fram Endurance with 15K+ on it, 3 OCI, waiting to cut open this weekend. I kind of hemmed and hawed about running it for another OCI, but in the end I picked up an STP XL when I went to the parts store to dump my oil.

Good Evening Board,

I am looking to buy an oil filter cutter, any recommendations?

RevRider
Tin snips and a screw driver to makes a hole. It won’t make for a great photo shoot but if your goal is to just check out the filter it’s all you need.

The is the Qagea 77750 Oil Filter Cutter, looks like an exact copy of the Longacre, except its $54 cheaper. They are even using part of Longacre's model number in their description. I think I'll give it a shot.

Longacre:

What is the country of origin for both of those oil filter cutters?

I'm assuming the Longacre is of USA origin for that price, or I would hope so.

I paid around $14 for a longacre copy off AliExpress a couple years ago. Looks idenitcal to the longacre copies on Amazon. Probably the same exact thing. Works perfectly fine. I cut open most of the filters on the 4 cars I service, so $14 was worth it to me. Quick and easy and nice and clean.

I just now got off the phone with "Gary" at Longacre. 1-800-423-3110.

I asked him what the country of origin was for the #52-77750 oil filter cutter.

His response was, "I believe that one is China."

I then asked him if the oil filter cutter was patented.

He said no because the cost of a patent would be way too high.

I then informed him that there are several brands on Amazon with the exact same part number.

He was totally unaware that other brands existed on Amazon with the exact same part number.

He then asked me how they can do that.

I said probably because it's not patented.

The Longacets branded cutter is probably made in one of same factories as all the knock-offs.

At this point I'm beginning to wonder if Longacre is even the original product designer.

If you're the designer, more than likely you're going to apply for a patent.

The actual p/n for the Longacer cutter is #52-77750, but the knock-offs just list the p/n as 77750. The Longacer logo is engraved on the back of the Longacer cutter, but seems you're paying about $50 for that because the rest of the cutter is really no different or doesn't really seem better than a knock-off. Like said, probably made in the same factory.

There is a knock off Longacre that touts stainless steel threaded rod, and comes with a right angle steel plate for a vise, allen keys, gloves and I think a spare cutting wheel for $17. The materials would cost more, but they must make it for $5 tops to make any money. It’s nothing anyone in the world can compete with.

If you're partial to the Longacre style cutter, buy a new one. The old one I have lacks the extra positioning holes for the bearing/screws. There are some small diameter filters that mine can't handle; the cutter adjustment won't engage the filter. Obviously, a design change was introduced some time ago.

The base shape is different and the screws and sliding bolt on back are flush. Probably a rarity now.

Still in the market @RevRider ?
Prices have gone down since ‘22. I got mine from AliExpress for $15 earlier this year. And have been making good use of it lately.

No preauthorization needed. 😉
