Recommend an oil for GX550

My GX550 is arriving very soon. I will be driving it to explore our beautiful country and it will be towing 6000 lbs(another vehicle, a Jeep TJ) and hauling around 800 lbs throughtout the journey. So it will be working very hard. Manual recommends 0w20 but I don't know if I can trust that. Nothing crazy, I just need something a little more shear proof as these turbo motors run hot. Thanks in advance!

Considering the concerns over the TTV6, I wouldn't want to give Lexus any excuse to deny warranty. So I'd use the Dealer for the complimentary oil change at 10k. Then I'd consider letting them continue the servicing at least while under warranty.

This is my vote. Normally, I’d want a 30 or 40 grade for this type of use. But, since a number of these engines have been eating themselves, I’d not give them any reasons to deny my warranty claim.

A very early oil and filter change might be a good idea for this engine, as well.

This is silly on a couple levels. First, many excellent oils meet Lexus specs. There’s no need to settle for whatever bulk swill they use.

Second, leaving the factory new oil in for 10,000 miles is a TERRIBLE choice. Get that factory stuff out of there ASAP— within 500 miles.

0w20 viscosity range is between 7ish to 9.3 if I am not wrong. Do you know of any 9.0 visc ow20?

Adding a correction to my previous post.

I seem to remember that most Toyota and Lexus Owner’s Manuals allow a higher viscosity for towing or high speed driving. Probably just has a recommendation for the oil to be API SP.

With that in mind, Mobil 1 0w40 or Castro Edge 0w40 would both be good choice.

Very nice car. I’ve been eyeballing these.

Edit: Here’s a screenshot of the OM with a note about higher viscosity.

My use case is pretty extreme, towing 6000 lbs over 10,000 miles or more. Once I cover the US mainland then I will be doing Alaska to Argentina. It is a very comfy truck that has an impressive towing capacity. I am not sure 0w20 is upto the task. If go with 0w20 I might have to change the oil way more frequently. It can tow 9000 lbs but it doesn't mean it is the best tool for that.

Then it sounds like you've already made up your mind, no?

5W-30 Mobil 1 EP it is.

Normally, on my own vehicles, I do an early oil change usually at about 1000 miles, and 600 or so miles on motorcycles.

I'm a former Toyota Master Tech. I still have many friends in that line of work. I wouldn't want to give Lexus (Toyota Motor Corp.) any excuse to deny the warranty on this particular engine.

Have you kept yourself up to date on this new 3.4 Turbo from Toyota? How does it do with a 30 grade oil?

Are you suggesting that Toyota would deny a warranty claim for doing the first oil change TOO EARLY? That seems highly unlikely

Engine tolerances haven't changed appreciably in decades. I'm sure the 5w30 would be fine for the engine. 0w20 is a spec to eeek out another fraction of a Mile Per Gallon. To satisfy the EPA and CAFE in the USA, and so Toyota can point to it as an example of their concern for the environment globally.

The only question is if your engine develops problems, they could do an analysis of the oil, and if the viscosity is off from the official specification, they could potentially deny warranty based on that.

The whole thing is disappointing to me, as a GX550 Overtrail was near the top of my list of considerations to replace a low-mile 5th gen 4Runner.

we got a 2024 gx550 and first OC was Havoline 0w20, 2nd OC is Castrol gtx 0w20. The truck runs normal w that weight here in southern CA. Will most likely use 5w30 after warranty

Any excuse? Like what? Only using an oil that meets their requirements?

If they are going to deny warranty, they have the burden of proof, not you. (Magnusson-moss).

Do they really check the oil's viscosity, is it common? 30 grade will shear to a 20 grade so how are they going to tell?,
