I am trying to double flare stainless steel brake lines on a GMC medium duty truck that I shorted the frame on. Tried the rental from Oreillys-they stated it would do stainless steel-it will not.

Ordered a turret style from Amazon that stated it could do stainless and not only will it not travel far enough to flare anything the dies won’t grip the stainless line hard enough to do anything if it did work properly. It’s getting sent back.

Additionally, I do not recommend this deburring tool either for stainless. The brake line immediately chewed notches in both the ID and OD cutters.

I'm not sure about the 6mm (1/4") one but I have the 3/16" version of this Capri tool and it works awesome! I have used it several times on my Cobra project. FWIW, I did not use it on SS though...

1/4" flare tool

Not many tools work well with SS, the ones that can do are usually the more expensive hydraulic ones. It is very hard to flare, Nicopp being the easiest. Dead soft copper tube is easier still but not for automotive use.

The price is within a few bucks of the MC from Amazon, it may be the same tool? Mastercool
I'm pretty sure they're different but that's one reason I just went ahead and got the Mastercool -- the savings weren't that significant.

I haven't used my Mastercool yet. I just like knowing I can flare lines if needed, and eventually I'll need to.

edit: the obvious advantage for @Creekside could be availability TODAY, assuming he's near a HF. You'd need to be in very large urban area to have any B&M that might stock the Mastercool. In the hellscape that is Boston, maybe??

Update-haven’t been around much since I posted this. The hydraulic shop I use a few towns over had the equipment and got both of them flared for $15. I’m not going to argue with that. Took about half an hour from drop off to pickup

That capri tool is great and convenient for nicopp. The fixture bolts to itself, but I have to wonder if the setup allows for enough force to flare stainless. It doesn’t seem like the strongest design.
