I have a cheaper Mr. Coffee pot that cost about $50. It made decent coffee at first, but ever since then the coffee always tastes like plastic, no matter what coffee I put in there. I keep the internals clean, and use white vinegar to clean it out, but it makes no difference. Is there anything else I can try? I recall my Mom having a cheap Mr. Coffee pot some time ago and experiencing something similar.

I have a gift card to Bed Bath & Beyond, and will likely buy a coffee pot from there if I do decide to buy another one. Can anyone recommend a brand or type? I really like the pots that grind the whole beans for you right before it brews, but those can get pricey, and I really don't want to spend any more than ~$80 on a coffee pot.

Percolators make aromatic but tasteless coffee which would be a big upgrade from a plastic tasting coffee.

Keurig would be a nice but expensive choice. If you want the regular type coffee maker, check our Gevalia.com. The coffee maker is good quality and they have expensive but pleasant coffees.

+1 on the keurig. we have one and love it. Im not really a coffee drinker the wife has a few a day, only when i work really early or have to work the dreaded 15 hour day usually 3 in a row, i like to have one in the morn to get me going. You have to order your coffee from keurig so its really cheap and get a couple hundred $ worth and the savings are huge. the coffee is top notch and its nice when you are able to make whatever kind you want and not have any waste. If you are going to get one make sure its not the small one. The big ones have the nice features and are a bit taller for travel mugs and what not.

Aren't all coffee makers these days mostly plastic?

FWIW, I've got a ~12yr/old Mr.Coffee that hasn't failed me yet. It's extra stylish all white plastic with the bright red LED clock/timer on the base. I use refrigerated filtered water, keep my coffee stored in the freezer and I make it strong. Dunno if any of that has much to do with it, but I always get complimented on how good the coffee is.

I've wanted a Keurig for so long, but my wife can't justify the more expensive cost of the pot + the coffee 'cartridges'. In a way, though, they save you money, since with a normal coffee pot, I always end up making too much and dumping the excess. And usually, I only drink one cup anyhow. Try making that small amount in a normal coffee pot - it never turns out good!

I first thought that our weird coffee taste was from our water, since we have a community well. But then I started using water that was filtered from our Brita pitcher, and the taste never improved.

Check out past two issues of Consumer Reports. They recap ones they tested and price range of the various good performers.

I am currently using a fairly old Gevalia coffee pot, and it works well, with no plastic taste.

I've always liked the one on the stove during the credits at the end of "Gunsmoke". You'd have to get a hot pad, though.

I've heard the Aeropress makes great coffee.

When my old Mr. Coffee 4 cup coffeemaker died, it was replaced with another cheap Mr. Coffee 4 cup coffeemaker. I can't tell a difference in taste between the two. I've had coffee from expensive machines and cheap. No difference in taste. The water and coffee used have far more effect for me than the coffeemaker.

I'd stay away from the Keurig. It is convenient, but tasteless. Every cup of coffee I've ever had from one has been bland and tasteless.

I personally think that every cup of coffee I've had from a Keurig was quite good, but to each his own. I'm in the middle of doing 2 super concentrated white vinegar clean cycles on my coffee pot, followed by 4 pot-fulls of water cycling through. We'll see if this makes a difference.

Maybe it's just me, but every cup of coffee I've had from a Keurig or similar machine has tasted like doody. If I wanted instant coffee, I'm quite happy to put in a spoonful of Sainsbury Instant and pour boiling water over it.

We currently have a grind-and-brew Capresso with a thermal carafe. It makes a fairly weak, tepid cup of coffee. The best coffee I've had (aside from our old and sadly gone percolator) is from the dead-simple Braun drip maker I bought 15 years ago. Still works perfectly and will gladly brew a rich, flavorful cup of coffee.

I've had a Cuisinart DCC 1200 for several years at home and I've been very happy with it. We also have the same model at our lake home that's a couple years newer and we're also very happy with it as well. I like the fact that I'm not locked into a specific coffee like some specialty makers are; I can grind and use any coffee brand I please.

I remember the pre-drip maker days when we had a percolator, and I well remember how horrid the coffee was. I honestly think I'd quit drinking coffee before I'd go back to drinking coffee made in a percolator.

You sound like a perfect candidate for a Black & Decker Brew & Go coffeemaker. Makes about 15-16 oz max, available online for ~$15-$30(Amazon will have it Dec 13 for $15, add $10 of othr stuff & get free shipping! Or just buy 2 of 'em.) The coffee gurus think very well of it, comes with a filter cone screen. I think it does even better when using white paper cone filters- use #2 size & cut 'em down a little, or order some #1 cone filters online.

You could spend a lot more & do worse. And with the B&D you'd never have to buy any proprietary, high $$ coffee pucks.
Here's a link to a bunch of links. Google results for Black & Decker Brew 'n Go

I picked up a stove top percolator at a yard sale for a buck.
The coffee out of it is a definite improvement over the 4 and 12 cup drip makers I have. You just have to play with your brewing times to get it just right.
