Try the DEFINITY Dakota A/T's they're a 50,000 mile tire @114.99 each tire from Pepboys and they usually have buy 3 get the 4th tire free with a rebate, since its a Z71 the A/T tread would be functional

I agree that the same tire may do different things with different users. Just wanted to make sure it was clear that neglect did not cause the problems I am having with the LE's. If anything, I'm probably on the other end (I found this site, didn't I? :) )

What tipped me off to the bad wear was the rear tires. They are wearing the centers out unusually fast. Normally my rotations every 5000 miles do a nice job of evening out any center wear on the rears with edge wear from the front steering end (more of an issue on my pickup though). In this case, the centers are wearing faster than the edges, suggesting overinflation, even at 30 psi, which is the current pressure recommendation. I am very leery of adding additional pressure to the tire.

Also interesting to note that the previous tires (Goodyear Wrangler RTS) ran 75,000 miles at 30 psi all around without this issue. Although they wore well, that's about all the good things I can say about the RTS!

+1
I use them on my Expedition and others (niece's minivan) with zero issues. Highly rated, decently priced.

I will never buy Firestone tires after their fiasco with Ford.

I was checking out tirerack and discount tire online and came across Nitto Dura Grapplers .

I did some googling and they seem highly rated and cost effective.

does anyone have any experience with these?

Which at least on the Explorers was due to FORD not properly inflating them.

It reduced the margin for error in the tire. The Goodyear tires never had this issue however. Even run at the Ford-spec'd pressure.

Michelin LTX M/S2 or Michelin X Radial LT2 (Sams).

If you just have to get something cheaper then you might try

BF Goodrich Long Trail T/A Tour

I bought a 2002 Dakota today that had a set of 255/70/16 Yokohama Geolandar H/T-S tires installed in Feb, still virtually new. Even after driving ~80 miles home today, they have only 627 miles on them. With so little driving so far, I can only report that they track very well & are pretty doggone quiet. (When I went to see & test drive the truck & first saw 'em up close, first thought was,"Those are gonna be LOUD." Nope, I wuz wrong!

) IMO worth a look.

The Suburban came with some Goodyear AT's with about 35% usable legal tread left, so at least I'll have a few months until I have to buy some tires...

thanks for the input, any more comments are welcome
