Reccomendation Please...

I just finished a 120k timing belt service om my son's 91 300zx twin turbo. On initial start we had some lifter tick for about 3 minutes; (first time). Currently using GC 0w30 with a Pure One filter. I am thinking about using a hd oil such as Rotella T 5w40 or maybe Redine 5w40. Many Z32 guys swear by Mobil 1 15w50. My main concern is the small sump (3.8 quarts) the age and the turbo heat. All opinions are welcome...

I would try the Mobil 1 15w50

Turbos are liquid cooled so keep an eye on water temp. Engine has an internal oil bypass valve. Spec Nissan oil filter does not have a bpv but Motorcraft fl400s equivilant filter has and it fits the 300zx. Try this filter with the current oil.

Oil filter mounts vertically. Prefill the filter.

Contrary to the masses, I would try Redline 10w30. There is no way this oil in that vis will hurt that engine. You'll get much better turbo spool up than with a 50. And it will get to the top end faster on start up in your climate.

Only if the consumption is excessive would I go to the Red Line 5w-40 in this app.

Try a Wix if you think the tick ADBV related. It might also be a good time for an ARX treatment (or two).

I tried 15W40 in my 1992 300ZX and wasn't happy with the performance. I could tell a difference-it didn't have the pep that it does with Amsoil 5W30 (which I now use). Although I have an NA, Amsoil should have no problems protecting the turbos.

I also agree with Volvohead that Redline would be a good product for this application as well as Amsoil.

The few minutes of lifter noise is common after replacing the t-belt. I think I would use the GC over the other oils you mentioned but any of them will do. I bet you don't hear the noise again.

Made in Germany Castrol Syntec 0w30 at auto zone. Redline or Amsoil should work just fine in your engine. It would be a good idea to consult with Terry with this. Dyson anaylist would provide a good value here. IMHO.
