Keep in mind that IF the combustion chamber is plugged up with carbon, then the compression ratio might be higher - requiring a higher than normal octane rating for fuel.
Also, heavy carbon build-up on the back of valves absorbs the fuel being sprayed into the cylinder and this creates a condition where higher octane is needed.
Some folks are using preventive maintenance measures to clean-up the valves, pistons, and combustion chamber so they can keep running lower octane fuel.
