Rebuilding an old NLA power steering rack?

What do you do when a power steering rack is leaking pretty badly?

My ‘91 Toyota Previa steering rack is dripping profusely. As in, after every trip, I’ll get at least 3-4 drops, regardless of the trip length.

OEM racks are $650. I’d prefer not to go that route.

Can Steering racks be rebuilt? I hesitate to buy cheap aftermarket racks, unless someone can convince me otherwise.

I've rebuilt a Mitsubishi (TRW-made IIRC) rack before, wasn't too difficult but I also had the old dealership tools and the FSM, and of course an OEM rebuild kit that was still available for sale. If Toyota or someone else is still making kits, or you can find a NOS Toyota kit, then technically yours could be rebuilt too.

If it has grooves and needs bushed that will turn into a mess.

If OEM racks are available it isn’t NLA.

Unless some element is physically worn down, its seals and standard parts.

Not seeing why it couldn’t be rebuilt…?
