rebuild an auto transmission

I worked at a used car lot, where we had a deal with a local transmission shop. If we pulled out a transmission of any kind, he would rebuilt it at his shop for $1000. We then put the rebuilt unit in and then sold the car.

We dealt with numerous Chrysler T&C transmissions, and a few GM 700R4 4Lxxx style units.

Ya he's right. If the trans dosen't need any special tools other than dental picks there not that hard to rebuild. A good rebuild book with an exploded view is necessary.

If one gets a reman auto transmission (from Jasper) I assume they do a lot more than just clean it and install a rebuild kit?

While we haven't installed a Jasper rebuilt transmission yet, I'm quite impressed by their program. One of their reps stops in from time to time and has shown us some of their process and was even going to fly one of us (me) to their plant in Jasper Indiana.

They seem to be very thorough and want to fix the transmission correctly. As TooManyWheels said, they apply updates and even make their own to solve specific problems on certain models. Another thing that I like, is depending on the unit and application, it may come with an install kit - cleaners, fluids, radiator, cooler line(s), check valves and so on.

I'm not sure if the warranty for a private buyer is the same as a shop (pro installed), but if we were to buy one, it'd come with a 3 year, 100,000 mile guarantee.

We've dealt with a few different re-builders and I can say with confidence that if I needed a transmission for my personal vehicle, it would be a Jasper.

This. One thing I hate more than having to do some jobs is having to do them twice.
