Reasonable size family sedan w/ MPG

Nissan uses the JATCO CVT's in their vehicles as does my Outlander. So far no problems with it and the 10 yr/100,000 mile Mitsubishi powertrain warranty should take care of it if one arises.

From what I've read about CVT's they work well with smaller 4 cyl engines. The one in my Outlander is a 2.4L.

Maybe have a look at the Mazda CX-5. It should have comparable hwy mileage plus its a wagon. And you can get it with a manual trans too if you like. Also its rated to tow 2000lbs which might come in handy sometime.

No problems at all with my mom's 2010 Altima V6 CVT. The car is truly world-class and I would buy for myself in a heartbeat. The next one appears to be even better.

With that said, I would get a Camry SE because Toyota's ease of servicing, wide dealer network, excellent parts availability, and easy resale make it a winner on those factors alone.

Excellent fuel economy, 44/40/42 city/hwy/combined.

Significantly more cargo space than the Camry.

I don't think anyone mentioned a Passat TDI yet. That car would also fit the bill quite nicely.

Second the Passat TDI. A friend has one, and reports getting 38 mpg highway with it driving like it was stolen. He also reported that it was very spacious on the inside.

If you're looking for a more compact family sedan, Cruze Eco MT is almost impossible to beat for the price. I can regularly get well over EPA highway with mine.

You could also test drive the 2012 Kia Optima. It is alot of fun, has many features but also with decent fuel efficency. The 2013 Fusion would definitely get my vote as well. The front end looks like a KIA Optima look-alike. The Optima is more of a four passenger than a five passenger. The middle rear seat is in name only.

I'm averaging 30-31mpg tank/tank with my 2012 Subaru Legacy CVT when ambient temps are 60degF+.

I don't count the small bursts of ~38mpg like some people rate their vehicle's MPGs.

2012 Camry Hybrid, combined 200 HP engine with 40 mpg city, 36 highway. I drove it one afternoon, very impressive. Only issues for large family may be the trunk and very limited pass through via rear seat. Also look at the Prious V, huge cargo carrying space on this new model

My Daughter has an 07 Nissan Versa. She had it at the dealer a few months ago for a new CAT that was done under warranty. They told her at that time that her CVT tranny was covered for 120k.
