Factory manual states to use 75w-140 in the rear diff of my 2002 Explorer. My wife does tow a horse trailer once in a while, but otherwise the vehicle is not driven hard. I have enough Redline 75w-90 fluid to do the Explorer, but wasn't sure if it was a good idea since the manual states to use the heavier oil. Thanks.

I don't think you will have a problem with RL.
I'd stick with Ford's required 75-140 synthetic especially if you tow horses, even if only once in awhile. Especially since Ford even puts a metal tag on the diff that states to use ONLY 75-140 SYNTHETIC FLUID. You can use the RL75-90 in the front diff if you want to. That's assuming you have 4wd
. The fluid in the front diff is not syn from the factory so the RL would be an improvement over the factory fluid.
