What can the car companies do to increase mileage? A lot. But they won't because improved MPG results in less engine wear and better engine life. The LaPointe Rule says that ALL the industries that make cars and fuels could easily improve MPG by at least double. Certainly the fuel companies could do so in a matter of weeks. The spark plug guys, the injector companies and of course the lubricants people could all contribute to high MPG if they wanted to. Mainly the oil companies would have to release the good mileage gasoline that they have buried for half a century. I could show them how to do it. But I am certain they already know how. For instance, the car jockeys could push more cars to be stick but without 4-wheel drive. They could warm the fuel as I do. They might go to Torco 20W-50 or 15w40 engine oils and Torco gear oils. They could easily make nozzle devices to improve vaporization. They could fine tune their computers to improve MPG rather than program them to kill it. They could use NGK plugs. They could insulate the oxygen sensors and use wide-band sensors. And so forth. I doubt they will, however, because they are trying to keep the production lines busy and do not want long lasting engines which is a side effect of good mileage. BTW GM sells Hummers in Central and South America that deliver 50 to 60 MPG. It is a fact. However, these vehicles cannot be sent to the U.S.A. There are small diesels in Europe that get 70 to 90 MPG.
