You probably remember me posting this saying that after I switched from a Bosch Premium to a K@N, I noticed a slight pressure drop throughout the rpm range. Well I just got the Jeep back from the mechanic with a new oil pump and a MUCH cleaner pan and pickup. It was so bad he had to use a wire brush drill pit on a drill just to get all the hard gunk off the bottom of the oil pan. He was also suprised the motor was still in good shape let alone the pump being able to suck anything through all the pickup.

Anyway, I'm gonna do a little experiment on some of the popular filters and how they affect pressure and if I get valvetrain noise at cold start. With a clean slate this should be a better representation. Right now the Jeep has a Wix (CarQuest filter) and 10w40 GTX high mileage oil that will be used for the experiment. Pressure readings are:

Cold idle and cruise: 70psi
Warm idle 30
Warm cruise @ 2k rpm 60
Warm WOT 65

I will post updates on this as I change the oil with different filters. Filters I plan on "testing" after this will be: PureOne, Bosch Premium, K@N, and an M1. Like most vehicles the sending unit is by the intake manifold, so a restrictive filter will show a difference at the guage. The intervals will be short at 3k or under. If anyone has any comments or suggestions, I'd like to hear them.

What I'd like to know is what kind of oil you've been using in this thing so I can stay far away from it.

I just bought the Jeep over the summer. The previous owner/s probably rarely changed the oil. It has 2 nice pitch black stain marks on the dipstick too. When I bought it, I didn't know that these stain marks were tell tale signs of a sludged engine. Since I've had it, I've put MaxLife in it then switched to GTX high mileage after finding out on this board MaxLife isn't as good as it used to be. It really irks me when someone thinks they don't need to or doesn't care about doing basic maintenance on their cars. We all know how durable Dodge's 318/340/360 motors, and my case has proved this again.

Whadayawannabet the previous owner leased the vehicle and didn't give a flyin' fig about proper maintenance? In that scenario, as long as he kept the miles under the allowable, avoided exterior dings, and had the oil changed at the maximum mileage limit with dino, he probably figured let it be the next owner's problem. If his contract provided for complementary routine oil and filter chnges through the dealer, do you think the dealer would bother going through the expense of more frequent changes or synthetic oil? Maybe I'm being overly harsh about the economics of post-leased cars, but it seems to me that buying a previously leased vehicle is an invitation to heartbreak. That three or four year-old leased Mercedes S-Class that looks so tempting on the "Previously Owned" lot could just as easily have come from a drug dealer/pimp as a retired corporate executive. (Although in today's realities, who's to say who's the bigger crook?...) At least you got on whatever problem you noticed (whether leased or not) and were able to salvage a potential disaster early on.

I agree, but I have a hunch the 2nd owners might have made it worse assuming the 1st ones never did much maintenance. I have never liked the whole leasing thing, and will most likely never lease any vehicle. I'd much rather take out a loan knowing that when it's payed off, the car is totally mine and that I can do what I want with it (mod it) without worry what the dealership will say. Out of all the Jeep's I testdrove this one drove the best and felt the "tightest." When I bought it, the 4 wheel low was even disengaged, so I know this thing has probably never seen anything rougher than a gravel road.

I almost got some to do the 2 bottle treatment, but I'm considering selling the Jeep this spring and getting a 5.9 model. I would scarcely finish the 2nd treatment before I'd be selling it anyway. Frank has probably gotten a little miffed at me for starting that whole rislone vs auto-rx topic, but even though I'm not getting any rx for this Jeep, the next Jeep will DEFINITELY get a treatment whether or not it has sludge problems. I have been recommending auto-rx to others on different forums who have sludge problems. I hope Frank sees this and realizes I'm not trying to question or doubt his product.
