I want to try some new SM-spec Castrol GTX 5w30. Bought it cheap at Kragen's. But folks here in BITOG tell me that the new SM oils lack Zinc and other camshaft/valve train protection goodies, and also, the 5w30 stuff will shear down to a 20-weight after 1500+ miles. Should I add a bottle of GTX 20w-50 to Beef Up the 5w30 some?

If you're running a race V8 OHV engine with a solid lifter cam that revs to 9,000 rpms, then you may have an issue with the lack of zinc. In any mass produced vehicle sold today, it isn't gonna be an issue. Neither will the shearing. Todays SM/GF-4 oils are better at controlling shear/viscosity breakdown. No worries!

If memory serves, Castrol GTX SM is 10.8cSt@100*C. That's a middle 30Wt when warmed up and will be fine. I just changed the oil in my Jeep with it(which usually sees thicker oils, thanks to BITOG, I am edumacated).

We've had a few days in the mid teens and the Heep starts easily and is pretty quiet for a 2.5L when warmed up.

Use it without worry.

What BITOG folks told you that? Have any screen names?

What is their minimum number for zinc & what brands of oil do they suggest not buying?

Some Valvoline Synpower Oil Treatment will beef it up nicely. Just remember it should bump viscosity about 1 cSt per half bottle.

Got a big lots near you. CD-2 Street Legal High Performance Oil Boost is on clearance for $1.99 per 16 oz bottle. It has about 4500 ppm zddp, 4X that of an SL motor oil. Half bottle will put your SM better than an SL. And should not mess with the viscosity either.

Flimflam want to beef up your GTX..... drain it out and pour in HAVOLINE
