On m saab, the badges are attached with what seems to be a dual-sided adhesive tape of some sort. It is black in color and pretty tenacious.

Some time back I caught one of the badging letters with my car wash mitt, and got it sheared off a bit. Yesterday when washing the car, I found that it was pretty loose, and pulled it off.

I figure I can clean up the remnants of the very tenacious tape with some mixture of kerosine, goo-gone, peanut butter (smooth), olive oil, etc. But I need to know how is best to re-adhere the badge.

Or am I best of just trying to buy a replacement?

Thanks!

If the badge still looks good, the best way of reattaching it is to use double sided tape. In my case, I found some Scotch brand that was for exterior application. Mine was lettering and trimmed any that showed w/an X-Acto knife. Was still on strong the day I got rid of the car.

3M double sided tape is pretty much the same as what was was originally used.
You can get it at Walmart or auto parts store.
Peel off one side and put it on the emblem then trim with a razor blade before removing the second tape.
After cleaning the old glue off use alcohol to prep the surface before the new tape.

Debadge the whole thing. Gives the car a clean look and will have some people scratching thier heads wondering what it is. And you dont need to worry about catching things like wash mits on it in the future.

3m tape is what my body shop uses as well.

To take off the old emblem use a fishing line, and there is a product that 3m makes called wipe away or something similar. It dissolves the sticky tape without burning the paint.

Wash and wax the car after you do this though, then when it dries re apply the emblem.

The only thing that I would recommend here is that I wouldn't apply wax to the area where you are reapplying the emblem. The 3m tape will adhere and hold up better to clean paint with no wax in my experience. I'd wax the car after you reapply the emblem.

A good tape is probably best.
Expensive 3m is very high quality.
You can also use trim adhesive - it also comes in black.
It is very tenacious - mask the surrounding area and use care.

I know this may sound silly, but would a careful application of JB Weld or JB Quick Weld work?

But emblems are supposed to be permanent, right?

So wouldn't a careful application of JB Weld make sense?

Sure - JB weld can work well.
Use JB Quick to attenuate runs and sags.
Actually, most over the counter epoxies would be fine for this.
I'd have to have a special reason to use them, though.

Be aware of any glue /tape color showing at the edges

I would not use any sort of rigid epoxy. If the car is not worth the effort of cutting out an appropriate profile of double sided tape, then use silicone RTV.

First choice would be a proper 2 sided tape.

A shortcut would be Automotive Goop by Eclectic Corp. Most of the other Goop varieties would work too.

The glue remains flexible so it's less likely to get broken off. Regular epoxy is brittle and would be easier to brake off if it got hit.

Goop takes a while to set. If you use it, glue the part in place and secure it with masking tape until the glue sets.

My GMC pickup had a piece or two of trim fall off it each year for the first few years I owned it. Nothing I glued back on with Goop ever fell off again and I had the truck until it was 12 years old.

After 12 yrs the truck would fall off the trim .....
