Rattling inside Mann filter...

I just changed the oil and filter on my 2000 VW Beetle. I was using Esso XD-3 Extra 0W40 with the OE Mann filter (this is the filter that says 2yrs/30000km on it). Oil and filter were in use for 12000km.

Anyway, after removing the filter I noticed a rattling sound coming from inside the old filter that the new filter didn't make. Any ideas on what this could be? Sounded to me like it was coming from the far end of the filter - bypass valve?

What would cause this? I'm fairly sure I would have noticed this if it had been happening when I installed the filter 12000km ago, so it's something that has happened while the filter was in use.

My guess is it probably did rattle when you bought it but you never notice because you never shook the filter.

You can call Mann Filter and send it back to them and have them check it. They should send you a service report.

Generally when this happens the tension spring in the bottom of the can is either upside down ( if it is a leaf spring type) or is if it a coiled spring it could be to short or misaligned.

Thanks for the replies. So what sort of performance issues would this have caused while the filter was in service?

You might want to do oil analysis if you aren't already.

Maybe you haven't dumped your oil out/off yet. So a sample of the oil from this service interval would be good.

Technically if the tension spring is at fault and the reason for the rattle. Imagine an element not sealed properly against the backplate. What do you think happens to the oil when it enters the filter?

True story.....

I attended a dealer meeting for a Japanese company Champ private labelled for as the tech person to answer questions.

I was with the sales manager whose account it was.

We had a table set up, informational brochure, etc on display. We also had a few sample filters with their Logo on the filters. You have the filters gasket side down so they sit on the table. The Logo is 180 degrees inverted so one can read the logo properly.

So the dealers are roaming around looking at the various vendors set ups.

The USA General manager comes by with a top Exec from Japan to show him our stuff. The Exec doesn't speak English ( or if he does he keeps it to himself). So the Japanese USA General Manager is translating for him. I answer the few questions asked.

He picks up a filter and asks "why is the logo upside down?" I explain it is a display sample otherwise when the filter sits on the table the logo would be upside down. But the actual product has the logo properly oriented for the filter which hangs directly under the engine.

Now he looks inside the filter. These samples contained no filter element and were hand made in engineering because the big deal was a new logo switch. And the Exec asks..what about the filter element. Before I could answer..genious salesman answers " that's how we keep the price down."

Jokes aren't good when someone is translating.

If i'd have had a gun, i'd have shot him myself. As the Exec got a very pale look. I explained that the actual product did have a filter inside and that these filters were designed to highlight just the new corporate logo as the brochure clearly shows the construction of the entire filter. He accepted my version of the explaination and went on to the next vendor.

I would wager money he asked that someone go get him the actual product in the warehouse to have a look ( as this was being held at their distribution center).

Names are being left out so as to protect the guilty..

He doesn't work at Champ anymore anyway. And Champ still has the account..
