MANN Filters at AAP

They've probably been at AAP for some time now but, I just noticed that my local AAP carries MANN Oil Filters(~$13.99 ea).

I have heard of Mann oil filters over the years expecially here at Bob's but, really don't know much about them(not that I'd spend the money on one).

Does anyone here at Bob's use a MANN Filter? What's their claim to fame/so special about them, who makes'em??? Just curious

Many of the Mann filters for American/Japanese/Korean cars are rebadged Purolator Classics.
The European car applications seem to be 'real' Mann filters (and top quality).
I purchased one at AA for my brothers Volvo and it was very well made.

I got a Mann fuel filter in a purolator box from Advance for my mercedes diesel. They must share cross-conversions when it makes sense.

And cheap too.

Rock auto has manns for pretty cheap in apps you might not expect.

+1 The made in the US Mann spin on's are as described, but more expensive. Nothing wrong with them, but might as well buy a $3.27 Classic at Wally. The AAP US made Mann's didn't start out as high priced, but that changed and now the price is whacked for what it is imo.

Hello, To Char Baby: I use MANN or Mahle cartridge filters in my 5 cylinder Volvo engine. I love how they appear to be a "hard sintered" material; like a sintered brass fuel filter only finer and paper colored. I once got a DriveWorks element as part of an oil and filter special at AAP. It more resembled the softer conventional elements we see in filter dissections here and in filter "internals" displays. I used the DW for a shortened Summer OCI. I'm back to "the hard stuff" now and forever. Kira

Mann is a HUGE OEM supplier in Europe. A lot of BMWs, Audis, Mercedes, VWs, etc. come with Mann filters from the factory. And as others have said, they are in a partnership with Purolator.

AAP really jacked up the prices of the Mann filters. A regular spin-on is over $7, and the cartridges are almost $20!

They used to be very reasonably priced at AAP. You could get a rebadged Classic for under $4, and even the cartridges were under $10.

I don't know why they doubled the prices like they did.

AAP also wants $9 for a purolator ecotec filter that one can get at walmart for $3.27.

I figure it's because they figured out that oil filters made good "order padders" to hit a coupon threshold.

Yep, the exact same MANN filter is sometimes in a Puro Classic box.. Also, some filters are not correctly cross-referenced.

I always buy Purolator L25277 OEM-quality fleece filters for my E320 for $13.59,
instead of the MANN branded (exact same) HU 718/5 X for $14.89,
and definitely not the AAP-suggested paper version, L25276 that costs $14.69

In fact, when you open the L25277, MANN is stamped on the top of the filter

I agree. At the very most, pay $9.75 or so for the 718/5 X. This is the same as a genuine Mercedes filter.

I also have a Saab with 2.8 V6. The genuine filter is something like $16 with no O-Ring included. The Mann filter is 100 percent identical includes the O-Ring and costs $5.00 online.

On European cars, Mann branded oil filters, air filters, and cabin filters are big money savings! Cheaper than doing maintenance on Japanese or American cars with these filters.

I got a Mann filter for dirt cheap at Advance Auto. It was for a 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser. Ever since then, I never saw another Mann filter at Advance Auto.

Mann and Bosch co-own Purolator. Their offerings for standard screw-on applications are made by Purolator. Mann screw-ons and the Bosch Premiums for domestic applications are similar, in not the same as the P1's.

Yep the Bosch Premium and P1 both claim to have exclusive filtering medium and somehow both get 99.9% efficiency!

I have managed to source a couple of HU 718/5 X equivalents "made" by Bosch.

They are identical. On eBay, they sell for $40 in Australia!

Not any more. Mann + Hummel signed an agreement last December to acquire Bosch's 50% share of Purolator. M+H is now the sole owner of Purolator filters

As said, the US made Mann spin on's currently sold at AAP in the yellow and green box with nitrile adbv's are in all likelyhood and best information, Purolator Classic clones.

As for the P1 and Bosch Premium, river rat's filtration comparison testing showed the P1 and the Bosch Premium to be virtual clones in efficiency. If there is authoritative/published information to the contrary afaik it's never been posted. Information lacking to the contrary and based on r_r's results and the same published efficiency percent, I'll accept that with the exception of outer can construction, P1 and BP are also clones.

As for the topic, seems a distinction needs to be made between the current US made Mann spin on filters sold at AAP, which are made by Purolator, and the still German made Mann spin on's and cartridge filters. Two different products.
