when i crank my 1994 range rover it makes a rattle sound and i think its coming from the plenium(the top of the motor where the carb would be. the motor is 4.2 efi. then when the motor gets warm it makes a loud ticking sound from the valve cover. im not a mechanic and would like some insight on what would be the problem as its hard to find people to work on rovers that charge normal prices that i could afford. your help is appreciated. i changed my oil twice and im using 10 40 part syn with one quart of lucas. and i did a motor flush also. it is still there. i just bought some auto rx to see if that will work.

I dont know how others feel about lucas, but stop using it is my recommendation.
The ticking is probably a valve, auto-rx can help with this.
Also Part-Syn oils are usually crappy. Use full dino (Conventional) oil for Auto-RX. I recommend Shell Rotella-T.
After the auto-rx I'd switch to a good full synthetic like mobil 1.
Do your own oil changes there simple. The rattling you heard could be anything, try tightening some stuff down around the engine bay maybe?
Also engine flushes for the most part are bad, solvents arent good for cars engines, they can break large chunks of sludge and dirt free which in turn could block a oil passage.

What kind of oil filter are you using? Is it mounted vertically w/ opening on top, horizontally, upside down? Has the cranking noise always been there, or just start with your own oil changes?

A rattling sound, almost like the one a diesel engine makes, could be caused by one or several loose spark plugs. Make sure none are loose.
well it started about just a little bit ago. i just bought it with 66,000 miles on it. the rattle sound is only on start up and it makes the idle go up and down for a minute then it stops and idles right. then when the car gets warm and start driving it til warm it starts ticking like a lifter. the oil filter is a toughgard fram. i changed the oil a 1,000 miles ago and change it again with 4 qts of 10, 40 part syn. and lucas. drove it only 100 miles so far. the oil filter is tilted to down but not all the way. it was doing the ticking when before i changed the oil the first time. do you think the rattle sound has to do with the air or fuel system?
I've had startup rattle on one of my cars using fram products. Switching to a purolater premium plus seems to have solved that problem. Others have reported similar results by moving away from fram. noisy lifters may be a feature of that car.
the rattle was there before i put fram on it. and the noisy lifter didnt start until after i bought it. and before i changed the oil. the first oil change was by a lube place so 1,000 miles later i changed it myself. when i first bought it the check engine light was on. then my wife kept the fog light s on one night and the battery went dead. never had a chance to see the code. and it has not came on since a about a month ago? any thoughts
I would get a manuf. recommended oil filter, as defined in the owner's manual. Why? Because the oil filter you are using may not have the correct Anti Drain Back valve in it. If so, the oil drains out overnight and when you start it up it is noisy until the filter fills up with oil. Not good for the engine. Also, a leaking exhaust manifold can make a ticking noise until it heats up enough to seal. Solution- torque the exh manifold bolts to spec. If that doesn't solve the problem, try replacing the exh. man. gasket.
Obviously it is not this problem in your situation.
The rattle my car had idle was thought by me at 1st to be a Idler or Tensioner Pulley.
Just found out however my Catalytic Convertor's substrate is falling apart internally causing the rattling.
So whatever your case is hopefully it will not be as pricey as a new Cat + 02 sensors.
