Rant about USAA Insurance

As my wife served as a nurse in the U.S. Navy, we have been insured by USAA for 38 years while living in PA, VA, NC and FL. However, on our recent move from NC back to PA, I decided to pull the plug on USAA and switch to Amica Insurance. Yes, there was an annual savings of about $425 with Amica for combined automobile, renters and umbrella insurance, but I did this because in my experience the level and quality of policy service and claim service we have received from USAA has declined steadily over the years. I attribute this to the company's expansion in the marketplace (too many TV ads to increase membership). I will miss the annual distribution check that USAA issues to its members, but I've already experienced improved service and a superior website with Amica.

Thanks for the report.

My single contact with USAA couldn't've been smoother.
A lady backed into my car 7 years ago. We exchanged.
I called USAA. They knew my name and suggested 3 nearby auto shops.
Zip-zap, done.

This has been a common theme across many platforms on the web.

How a company performed 7 years ago and how they perform today can differ. FYI.

I’ve been very disappointed with both USAA banking and USAA Insurance recently. They’re difficult to get on the phone and the “bot” often fails to get me to the right person. I’m angry by the time I get to a live human out of frustration of being lost in phone menu purgatory for five minutes, talking to a bot that cannot understand my voice.

In 40 years with the company, I’ve had very few claims, but their customer service has become atrocious, and our homeowner claim last year was a huge hassle. Underwriting the policy was a huge hassle on our new house. The worst part came when they said they needed photographs of various parts of the interior to determine the replacement cost, especially things like flooring, finishes, and cabinetry. Closed in the house in March. They knew I wasn’t moving in. But they began calling me several times a week asking for photographs of the interior. I provided them the Zillow photographs. Not good enough. After two months of weekly harassment, I let them know that I wasn’t yet in the house and I wasn’t able to comply with their demands, and they were welcome to find another client. They backed off a little bit on timeline, but they said that I needed to download some app, that would allow me to take pictures that were suitable for their underwriting.

I travel frequently, and I’m often out of country, soI wasn’t able and they finally agreed to send a photographer to take pictures of the interior so that they could underwrite policy.

If they told me I was going to go through all this hassle from the beginning - I would never have used them.

Recently, USAA Banking changed their “bill pay” policy as follows:

They debit your account the day the check is mailed.
The check is mailed from a 3rd party.
They don’t provide a canceled check image
They won’t allow you to stop payment

So, under this policy, I sent a check for rent (my shop). Landlord says they didn’t get it. USAA can’t track it. I can’t track it. I can’t put a stop payment on it. It’s lost.

Fraud investigation says, “we attempted to contact the payee, but were unable, your account has been debited $1,175”.

That’s it. Gross ineptitude on the part of the fraud investigator by failing to actually make contact with the payee. USAA assumed that I was at fault. I paid the rent using my credit card. I am still arguing with USAA and have opened the fraud case again.

USAA fails to realize that this is the straw that broke the camel’s back - I will slowly unwind my relationship with them. Starting with banking. I’ve been moving money out of my accounts for a long time* and we are talking a six figure amount.

I canceled USAA bill pay last month after this policy fiasco.

I just shifted my USN pension direct deposit to Navy Federal.

I’ve contacted an insurance broker for homeowner’s and auto insurance.

One step at a time, but with each step, I am unwinding the relationship. I will put parallel institutions to work. When the direct deposit starts going to NFCU, I will take my paycheck elsewhere, too. I currently have checking, savings, and credit card at multiple institutions.

All of them offer better service, better rates, and less hassle than USAA banking.

There is no longer an advantage to being in the USAA member. I am just a number to them. They’ve grown rapidly by lowering the standards of membership. They have spent money in advertising, and fancy jingles, to the detriment of their product competitiveness and their customer service.

Addressing me by my retired rank when I get a representative on the phone is a nice touch, but utterly inconsequential when compared with poor products and lousy service.

*For example, Alliant Credit Union pays 3% on a savings account. Vanguard pays me 3.35% interest on a savings account - but USAA pays 0.1%. When I inquired about this disparity, they had the chutzpah to say, “we pay competitive market rates.” Sure you do. Keep telling yourself that.

Do you guys vote when you receive your ballot?

Do you make contact with the candidates and let them know your feelings?

Just curious more than anything else. I got my voting packet this past week.

Haven’t seen it in years. Like I said, I’m nobody to them.

Weird. I get one every year.

Yup. Started about 7-10 years ago.

Been with USAA for 39 yrs now. They have had my homeowner's policy for 31 yrs and not a single claim filed by me. Credit card for decades. Subscriber's Saving's account balance gives an annual rebate of $600-$800. The auto policy annual rebate is typically $200-$300 now. It's a nice chunk of change to help pay for several months on the auto/insurance policies.

The auto policy has had 5 claims against it in the 39 yrs....all "totals" on older, lower mileage cars....where I received what I felt the car was really worth or even more. So I know that didn't make me a "star" policy holder in their eyes. At least the "last one" was 8 yrs ago.....retirement has its pluses. I have to wonder if I switched companies would that come home to roost with other companies? It's easier to keep everything under one company BUT I've been at least thinking of pricing or going elsewhere.... though I'm pretty confident getting a payment check out of any of those other companies with cheap rates (State Farm, Progressive, Geico, All State, etc.) will probably be cheap as well.

When I had an Umbrella policy with USAA about 20 yrs ago, they cancelled it after my border collie bit someone at night when it got out the front door sneaking past my wife at 10 pm. Someone was lurking in the shadows across the street and it spooked him. To keep the policy we had to get rid of the dog. We gave up the policy, kept the dog....erected a full yard fence....and ensured a leash was on him before the front door got opened. No dog since he passed in 2012.

I have found it odd that since I first insured the house, I'm not aware of USAA or their agent ever visiting the property, and certainly no one ever entered the home. Heck, no one has ever called or contacted us to ask any questions about anything. They certainly are hard to get a hold of these days. On one credit card dispute this year over a $300 item, they fully reimbursed me for the item after PayPay wouldn't help.....and had me keep the item. I only asked for $50-$100 to compensate for some damage. And they didn't want to hear about me getting "too much." Just told me it was all settled and forget about it. It often takes some time to get to the right agent who can actually solve your problem. They are always very polite on the phone while thanking you for your service. I'm sort of surprised at some of the responses here. Maybe I'm too sheltered?
