It barely increased fuel economy. It's more for fast restarts and giving a little power boost of 60hp or whatever nonsense it was but that little 500 or 600 whr battery under the seat likes to fail and costs over 2k to replace.
Some member on here had one fail two years ago I think but if I remember he got lucky and got it warrantied but the would be cost to replace the turd was over two grand.

More importantly, why does anything that is a 2026 model year or later still have stop/start???
I’m guessing there are discussions at the auto makers with people for and against it. My 2024 VW Jetta GLI didn’t come with stop start only because it’s a stick but the automatic comes with it. I think some stick cars in Europe come with it.
Engineering lead time. It is a reality.

It really makes the most sense with a manual transmission; it only shuts off the engine in neutral with the clutch pedal released, and it restarts as soon as you press the clutch pedal to put it into gear. My manual car is too old for it, but I really don't think it would bother me like it does with an auto. The only way start-stop isn't aggravating in an automatic car is if it has at least a mild hybrid system.

It is not only that. Some are also waiting to see how long this policy will last. There is possibility that next administration will reverse policy. There is nothing worse for development when policy makers start playing ping-pong with regulations.

Same. FCA/Stellantis had to get aggressive on that after some actor didn't put his WK2 in park and got ran over.
In my JLU, if I have the door open and start moving, it will slam HARD into park. I couldn't figure it out the first time it happened. But if I take the doors off, no problems! LOL
My rental VW Golf in Ireland came with Start/Stop, and it was a 6-speed. It took a few steps on the touchscreen to turn it off every time we started the car. It wasn't that bad, but I would rather not have to do that every time I started the car.
I've never liked Start/Stop, and I never will. It's just nonsense.
The EPA is unconstitutional in its current form. If congress wants us to have start / stop they should vote on it, so I know who to fire next go. The current court seems to agree with me on this, and had been stripping some of the EPA rulings on things like this slowly - see Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo (2024).
By delaying the court making such decisions by having the current EPA relax such rules, they may actually be saving the EPA because one judge on the court changes and these rulings can change also.
Try it in stop-and-go traffic while constantly having to use the clutch. Driving through Killarney, Ireland, just before a Hurling match, with cars and pedestrians everywhere, is what taught me how to turn that nonsense off!
I get it, you won't always be in that situation, but Start/Stop is just an added failure point that doesn't add up in the great scheme of things.

I was actually thinking about this today as I was driving my manual 335i and could see how it would become annoying in a manual car, especially after I learned that it'll even shut off before you're at a complete stop.Try it in stop-and-go traffic while constantly having to use the clutch. Regardless of how I feel about the system, it's aggravating how difficult it can be to disable it if that's your preference. I notice that almost everyone I know (most of whom couldn't care less about cars) constantly disables stop-start if their car is so equipped. Seems senseless for the EPA to have given credits for this when all it does is make the routine of driving more tedious for most.
There were a couple of times that I wondered if I had stalled the car. That didn't fare well for me because my wife and I had a bet. She thought I would stall the car because the shifter was on the opposite side and I was driving on the opposite side of the road.
I'm happy to report that I never stalled the car!
I figured out quickly that it was the S/S system, and it just didn't feel right to me. Yes, it did shut off before we came to a complete stop as well! I didn't like it at all.
If it is something we're forced to have, a simple, physical button should be the method to turn it off. Not several steps through a touchscreen menu. I imagine it would become second nature to do it, but it's so unnecessary.
