Ram OLM and Oil Changes

Vehicle - 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 4.7L
Normal Service Interval - 6,000 Miles or 6 Months
Severe Service Interval - No Set Interval (OLM will go off between 2500 and 5500 miles for a Service within the next 500 Miles or 2 Weeks).
Daily Commute - 15 Miles and 25 Minutes / One Way
Fuel Mileage - 19+ MPG (Hand Calculated) over the last 2900 Miles.

Truck was 14 Months Old (Build Date) and had 2700 Miles when I bought it from dealer. With no record of service and no way to tell if the OLM had been reset I had the dealer change out the oil at 2900 Miles.

With 5500 Miles total on the odometer the OLM went off. I suspect it has never been reset but I dont know that.

Now what? Change it again within the next two weeks or ignore it?

+1 on that one. Change it out with something you trust and then you can extend your OCI's. Either way change it.

Im happy with the Mopar branded Pennzoil SN/GF5 and Purolator the dealer uses in the free oil changes. I think they both are sufficient.

PS The standard interval was increased to 8,000 miles on the 2011 with no changes other than the improvements SN/GF5 brought.

Just to clarify you changed at 2900 mi total on the odo and now have total 5500? Or did I misunderstand? What oil did you put in?

If it were mine I'd change it anyways but if I got it right there sure is no hurry.

I left my factory fill in until 8000km (approx 6000mi) and I'm an over maintainer. I have a somewhat uncommon belief that if breakin is happening the oil will be full of junk regardless and anything big enough to scrape anything will be caught by the filter. No sense changing it until it's broken in. But not a lot of folks agree with me there. I didn't used to think that way either, but with this truck that's what I did, it burns zero oil and runs flawless. I don't expect that to change anytime in the next ten years at least.

Correct. It has Mopar branded Pennzoil SN/GF5 Conventional.

My suspicion is the OLM has just come on for the first time at 5500 miles. Im not sure it can be reset unless its on. Instructions call for turning the ignition switch to on and depressing the pedal 3 times and turning the switch off. The check to see if its reset is to check to see if it comes back on the next time you turn on the switch.

I changed it the first time primarily because it had taken 14 months to accumulate 2900 miles with who knows how much idle time around the dealership. That and the fact someone may have reset the OLM without changing the oil.

Their is a rumor going around that the OLM always comes on at 2500 and 5500 miles for the 1st and 2nd oil changes on these trucks but then their are a couple of people that claim they didnt get the first until 5500 miles so who knows.

I wish you could pull up the mileage or percentage like on a Ford or GM but evidently the only thing you get is the "Change Oil" Message when you get within 500 miles. Im just going to change the oil and that way I will know I have the oil and OLM in sync.

The trans has two overdrives and the top overdrive (0.67) is really to tall with 32" Tires and 3.55 Gears for hilly terrain with this engine. The 0.75 Overdrive is much better. Tow/Haul locks out the top overdrive. The trans has the ability to progressively lock out higher gears all the way down whether in regular or tow/haul mode. I find it adequate up through an open car trailer with a relatively light car. Anything that has a lot of frontal area like a travel trailer would likely be to much.

I grew up when a 350 had 200 hp so at 310 bhp its still adequate in a 5500 lb truck. If I have any real complaint about the drivetrain its about the 3.00 1st gear in the trans. The new 6-Speeds in the Ford and Chevy have much better launch gearing.

I haven't heard about Dodge using a 5500 preset mileage at least for earlier model Rams with the OLM but I do believe Dodge preset the Ram OLM's to go at 2500 for sure. TONS of people reporting the initial tri at 2500. Too many for it to be coincidence IMO. Maybe in the newer Rams they added the 5500 in too? Mine went off exactly at 2500 in my 08.

It has not gone off on me again since however. I go between 5-6K over 6 months on the OC's without tripping it. It can be reset without it tripping as the dealer resets it each time they do my OC. Doing the procedure correctly will reset it.
