Anybody found a good power steering fluid synthetic or other wise to quiet down the power steering pump on both my 2000 F-350 Diesel and my 2002 Excursion diesel. I was leaning towards either red line synthetic power steering fluid OR Mobil Synthetic mercon.

thanks in advance

Dualie, I don't think it can be done!

Just kidding.....Fords are notorious for noisy PS pumps. I had a Mustang that went 125K with one so noisy you could hear it 50 yds away.

You might see what the owners manual recommends; I think it will say Mercon/Dexron ATF, instead of PS fluid. I would give the Mobil synthetic Mercon a shot.......

Check the owners manual. My '94 calls for type F, not Mercon in the power steering. I used type F Valvoline and have none of the typical Ford power steering noise.

Ford changed the spec in 96 to Mercon. Pre-95's (inclusive) used the Type F. (There may be exceptions, but I beleive this holds true for all Ford PS units.)

I once heard that back in the 50's, when Ford developed the Type F for their automatic transmissions, they also put it in the power steering units just to keep from stocking two different fluids. The similarity between the two fluids (PS and ATF), allowed them to do this.....
