Quietest window A/C unit ....

Mamam Bear and I are thinking about getting a 5000 btu a/c unit for the bedroomb but Mama Bear says it has to be quiet !!
Who markets an energy efficient small window a/c unit that is the quietest ?? TIA

I saw this in the west coast Walmart for 88 bucks CAD and tested it to be fairly quiet to begin with (passed my hearing test at low fan). also energy star approved for efficient energy use. Definitely something to look into:

Check with Consumer Reports buying guide.

Haier doesn't have a great reputation, as far as I'm concerned.
Check the country of origin on their products.
Bangaladesh, Pakistan, etc..
Chinese and Korean stuff is too up scale for them.

Central air is the way to go, every room is the same temperature, and the noise is almost non existant.

I goota tell ya Papa Bear, try ceiling fans first. You'll be amazed at how much heat these will absorb from your body as evening sets in. The white noise whirr of the fan will lull you to sleep and much cheaper to operate. I went with the 38" blade 'cause it was on sale, but I would recommend the 52" as Mama Bears can run a little hotter than us! I've found the AC will put you to sleep but you'll wake up freezing. The fan will be just fine in Canada.

Thanks everyone..... we have central air now but it seems a waste to cool the whole house during the night when all you need is a cool bedroom. Trying to save some energy (and cost !!)

Just wondering if one of you guys (gals)had recently purchased a small window unit and when you got it up and running you said to yourself "Man, that thing runs quiet"
We are located right between Detroit & Cleveland and it can get HOT around here in the Summer..we're supposed to have a low tonight of 75F and a small, quiet a/c unit in the bedroom window may be a cost effective alternative to cooling the whole house overnight. P.B.

H2Guru's ceiling fan suggestion will allow you to set the thermostat at a higher temperature and save some money, if that's what you're interested in.

Of course, then you get into "Honey I'm freezing, can we turn that thing off." "No, I'll start sweating, I'm hot enough as it is." Wife dons 6 extra blankets. "Well, then turn it off as soon as you cool down." Then, at 3:30 am, husband wakes up freezing, pulls up blankets, leaves fan on, while wife still looks like an Eskimo in the middle of July.

Can you tell I've been there?

LOL. I can see why some couples actually sleep in separate rooms, having been through as many temperature battles as I have the past 6 years. Someone needs to invent a dual zone climate control for the bedroom, like what many new cars come with these days.

I posted about this in another thread, but in my experience I have found Panasonic to be one of the quietest running window air conditioners you can buy. They've also got a very nice look to them, and are very energy efficient.

My parents went through quite a few brands of air conditioners before discovering Panasonic, and now they've got three of them. Their Panasonic units run about as quiet, if not quieter than a small fan set to low. Interestingly, they've got a ~3,000 BTU, a ~5,500 BTU, and a ~13,000 BTU unit, and out of the three of them, the ~5,500 BTU is the quietest. The 3,000 BTU unit is also over 10 years old, so that might have something to do with it.

Anyway, I can highly recommended a Panasonic for a good window air conditioner!

Very smart. Actually I think that the noise factor will not be a factor. You will still hear it, and if 30 decibils keep you awake..so will 20 decibils. It won't take long for your brain to filter out the sound. Also your brain will associate the noise with comfort. We keep out bedroom at 66 to 68 degrees with a 5000 Btu unit. Probably costs about 50 cents a night. Warning!!!!: "Don't try this with Central Air"

My Fredreich made in USA x-star 6300 BTU unit got installed today, and besides being the highest efficency advantage energy star unit I could find (11.5 EER and 19% better than the energy star standard - most are only 10-13% better). And, it is QUIET!
