So this actually happened a few days ago, and I'm just now getting around to posting it. So my friend's mom bought a new fusion a few months ago, 4 cyl.

She took it to Monro Quickie lube to get the oil changed. Well, they changed the oil. Then they didn't put the oil cap back on, and didn't tighten the drainplug. Guess what? Oil all over the engine, and a bone dry crankcase. not quite siezed, but doesn't sound healthy. I believe the term is "shemad" She's going to trade it in likely on a cruze, after the whole thing gets sorted out.

I've been taking my work vehicles to quickie lube places hundreds of times and still waiting for something to happen.

Agree that with a new engine (which the lube place insurance will provide with such an incident unless the vehicle is in such poor shape that they just total it out) why trade it? (unless they were going to do it anyway)

Last thing I'd do is trade something with a new engine...

My daughter had two problems with quick lube shops. A drain plug that was dripping because it was not tightened properly, and an oil filter that was also loose and leaked.(I took care of both of them) After that she had her Daddy do her oil changes.

In your case, fight for a new engine. Also why the change to a Cruze?

Well once she had you do it she knew it was done CORRECT each time and can't (I hope

) beat the price!

Dealers aren't necessarily better. I had one not tigheten the oil filter on my old Malibu, and the Dodge dealer I bought my Dakota from (who's no longer in business) didn't replace the oil fill cap, and on another visit left the entire intake plumbing disconnected. And the really sad part about the latter is that I left the truck there overnight, they called to tell me it was ready; it's not like I was breathing down their neck asking when would it be done.

Interesting....agree with the new engine.

I had to get the Cobalt changed at the dealership a few days ago (back is currently healing) and they didn't close the hood, or put any of the valve stems back on either...

I know these situations are very rare and the vast majority of people have no problems after hundreds of visits to quickie lube places and all of that, but STILL... It boggles the mind how they can completely screw up the one single job that is their specialty. How often do you hear about a window washing company accidentally breaking all the windows in a building or a mobile dent repair company accidentally ruining a car while popping dents? But it seems like there is always a story about a quick oil change joint completely blowing an oil change. Come on, it can't be that hard to keep an eye on the new guy, can it?

Based upon the total number of oil changes they do, the few that actually end up damaging a vehicle are statistically insignificant.

I only used Jiffy Lube with a single vehicle for about 3 years. It was a Trailblazer and was a company car. The fleet management company would only allow the truck to go to places that they had a contract with and Jiffy Lube was the most convenient for me. I put about 90K miles on it in 3 years with zero known issues regarding the actual work done.

My biggest concern with places like this are the constant efforts to upsell services that are not necessary. Every single oil change I took that truck in for (must have been at least 20) they tried to get me to authorize the air filter and wiper blades. Every single time. I always refused unless it really was time, but I couldn't believe how many naive people would let them turn a $25 oil change into a $70+ money grab. Shameful, really.

Most of us here wouldn't fall for this stuff, but I'm sure we have lots of family and friends who wouldn't know better.

WE HAD A CUSTOMER THAT THEIR LOCAL MONROE SCREWED UP AN OIL CHANGE ON AND THEIR INSURANCE PAID TO HAVE A MOTOR PUT IN.

Over the period of a month I got ~4 ring/pinion/bearing jobs courtesy our local Quickie Lube. After the second one our service manager would call them up and get it approved over the phone. All it takes is one kid sleepy/stoned/not paying attention to do some damage.
