So next time I change my oil, which may be some time this summer, I may just change it myself using Pennzoil Ultra or Platinum and a Toyota OEM filter. I am currently running on Maxlife 5w30 Full Synthetic, but doubt I'm going back to another Valvoline Instant Oil change due to outrageous pricing. I have considered Ultra the most since it is only $27 for a 5 quart thing at Walmart. I have a 2007 Toyota Yaris with 87xxx miles, no leaks or anything. Financially, I could care less about which cost more, but which oils would provide the best protection? Should I stick with Maxlife full synthetic, or would I be doing my engine a favor by switching to PP or PU, i know both are great brands. Also I have always run 5w30 in my car, but have recently discovered a TSB recommending 5w20 for my engine, is it still safe to swap even after feeding the engine 5w30 for 87xxx+ miles?

The engine could blow, don't swap to 5w20. Just kidding, engine will not care if you switch grades. I like sopus products. Some will tell you to buy whatever is on sale. Welcome to bitog.

it is safe 5w20 will be just fine and run cooler..Also buy whatever oil that is on sale with the api sn rating. Because there is no best oil they are all good

PP 5w20.....should be just great! No worry about switching. Your engine will run cooler...and you might get a little better mpg...a real plus with todays gas prices.

If the TSB recommended the change, I would stick to it. You should have no problems with PP/PU. They are a fine oil.

I did it, no problems at all. RX has never run better.

Thanks guys, hopefully with some 5w20 in there, I can beat my PB of 42 mpg, although I don't think swapping from 5w30 to 5w20 will have all that much difference

My MPG`s went up aprox. .5 -.6. Not quite a whole MPG.

I know I am speaking with the choir but both oils are fantastic for your vehicle and I would choose whichever is on sale. Ultra has been harder and harder for me to find so I would choose PP due to it being easier to find locally.

Welcome to BITOG

.5 -.6 is actually a huge amount of MPG (but depends on the original mpg, which is why fuel/distance (L/100km) is a more linear comparo).

If you were getting 30mpg and now get 30.5, that is over 1.5% difference.
If you were getting 20mpg and now it's 20.5 that's 2.5% difference.

In terms of at the pump, with $4 gas, that's the same as 6cents off per gallon (8.5cents for 20mpg) , a difference that will cause most drivers to fillup at 1 station over the other.

At the same time it shows how hard it is to measure MPG. This difference in 10gallons is getting 305miles vs 300miles. something definitely hard to reliably replicate.
