Hi I would like some opinions on what type of oil would be best to break in a mild 340 mopar stock heads lower end cast pistons mild cam-valve springs. I was thinking Rottela t would work well but am open to sugestions.

I'd say straight 30 for the first 20 minutes and then drain it out. Next would be another round of straight 30 for a 1000 miles. After that would be 15W-40 from there on out.

The 340 is a sweet engine.

Would love to have one in a 70-72 Duster.

Good luck!!!!!

SAE 30's would be a good choice for break-in, but you need to look at the spec's. The Delo 400 SAE 30 has a lot of everything that you need but perhaps too much friction modification for a good break-in. The Rotella T SAE 30 is an obsolete diesel spec that won't give you all that you need either for ZDDP.

Try a CI rated oil and heat it up before dumping it back into your fresh rebuild and firing it up. The old Rotella T 15W-40 should do nicely. The Rotella T SAE 30 plus GM EOS will also do very nicely.

Rotella T will do fine and you won't have any problems at all with it. You may want to consider running the 5W40 synthetic from Rotella once you have it run in well. It's a very versatile oil.

15W40 Rotella T for the first half hour or so of its life. Then dump the oil and filter for more of the same.

After you believe its broken in maybe switch to 5W40 Rotella T Synthetic and Pure One Purolater oil filters.

The 340 is a nice old design, and I believe that it would probably live on anything oil-wise.

Good luck Sir.

Rickey.

Just what is all he needs for ZDDP?
Please back your response up with something of substance.

Rotella T 15W40 and a bottle of GM EOS will work fine.

My latest creation was ran in with W/M 10W40 and a bottle of GM EOS.

I'm not trying to downplay Pure One's but has anyone else experienced restricted flow with these? My '94 Grand Cherokee with the 242 clatters pretty bad just after startup with a Pure One and 10w-30 even on days when it's 70 out.

I thought I had an engine problem but once I switched to a Wix filter I have not experienced that startup clatter any more. Confused

Rotella T will work just fine if that is what you have on hand... do you have flat-tappet lifters? If so why not add a bottle of Valvoline Synthetic Oil Treatment for a little extra extreme pressure additives... By the way what car or truck is this small block going in?

Thanks for the input. It is a flat lifter cam and is soon to be residing in a 66 barracuda mild street car

I have a race engine and after a thorough research a bunch of people recommended the Brad Penn Break in Oil

Brad Penn Break In Oil

Now this oil is meant strictly for the initial cam break in. Its a non-synthetic, straight 30weight oil with lots of additive stuff. Run it at 2500-3500 for 20minutes.

Drain this oil and put your favorite multi-grade dino oil. Drive that for about 200miles, change oil and filter again with the same dino oil and somewhere around 1000-1500miles switch to synthetic.

Don't need synthetic oil in that engine, Any Hdeo will be all the engine needs once broken in. I had a 70 Challenger with a 340 4 sp cam headers and aluminum manifold ,6,400 rpm max rpm and had 132,000 whin I sold it and still ran good.

I think the Brad Penn oil for break in is kinda cool. It's nice that an oil company would go throught the trouble to develop a product like this for the public. If I were building a serious motor or any rebuilt/new motor for that matter I would definitely give this stuff a try...!

That there Brad Penn Break In Oil is kinda cool...nice for a big company to formulate a specialty product like this! We need a Brad Penn site sponsor. If I were starting a new or rebuilt motor I would definitely give this stuff a look!
