My BIL almost got gouged by the stealer for a diff fluid, trans fluid change. So, I offered to do it for him.

I'll most likely be using Amsoil Severe Gear in the rear diff. I am pretty sure there is a drain plug, as well as a fill plug. Anything else I need to know?

For the trans, which is a 4L60E, is there a drain plug on the pan, or do I actually need to drop the pan? Planning on using Amsoil ATF here.

Any help is appreciated. Truck currently has ~50k miles on it.

Thanks!

Drop the pan see what the filter is like some filters are a screen some are a felt like material . Just dropping the pan changes about half the fluid so the best way is to do a trans cooler line flush. I am not sure about the diffs unless I look at them.Dealers usually seem to gouge.

My advice is to consider an an APPROVED (important) DEXRON-VI fluid. Taking that route, in my opinion, you will get a better fluid for a lower price.

I put the ST Dex VI in my 03 Yukon and am happy with it. My rear diff does not have a drain plug! But the front does! Annoying!

None of my GM trucks have a drain plug on the rear diff. Put a pan under it and loosen all the bolts. Pull the cover away and the fluid will drain into the pan. When finished draining remove the bolts and clean cover, bolts etc. Some people like to use silicone to make their own gasket. I prefer a paper gasket from the parts store. Put on the new gasket and tighten all the bolts evenly all the way around, clean around and the remove the fill plug on the side of the diff housing. Fill it to about 1/4 in from the bottom of this hole with new fluid. If you are lucky you may have a drain plug on your tranny. One of my trucks does, the other two don't. All are 4l60E's.If you have to drop the pan, losen the bolts so that one corner of the pan hangs lower than the rest. This makes it easier to get it in the drain pan.

Make sure you get the fill plug out of the diff before you start pulling the cover. They sometimes seize in the housing...

Any suggestions for what to use in the diff? I may not have time to get the Amsoil.

Thanks.

When I changed the differential fluid in my S10 truck, I just bought a clear hose (around 1/2" diameter) and use it to make a syphon. I could take most of the old fluid out (almost 2 qt). Some advices: do it with a warm fluid, make sure that the hose reaches the bottom of the differential and that it is very clean, be carefull not to swallow the fluid when you start the syphon.
