My 88 dodge aries has some haze (possibly rust/sludge....?) in the bottom of the "recovery tank" or expansion bottle (non pressurized tank.....afaik) - it's almost the haze to the point where it's hard to see the coolant level in the reservoir tank......I was thinking of grabbing it with like a bottle cleaner and/or wire brush.....? But then there's the whole thing about that stuff floating around, circulating around my system.....
I've been contemplating running the Prestone Flush for a couple miles - i.e.: draining the coolant/antifreeze, adding the flush + plain water, and taking a stroll to the store (10 miles or so) then bringing the car home and draining it.
I know the bottle says to let the car idle until the thermostat gauge reaches the closed loop.....but would actually "driving" the car with the flush in there hurt anything?
I could understand with it in there a couple DAYS........cause the flush would be going from cold to hot multiple times, and probably not good, having too sludge (possible....though my radiator looks like brand new........just the expansion tank that looks dirty...) but I'm just thinking to and from the store, dumping it out, then filling it with plain old distilled water til clear, then driving with the clear water in there to get the remainder of the flush recirculated out, then a final drain, and fill with green 50/50....
BTW, anyone used the Prestone "Flush and Fill Kit" that some auto parts (and WM....) sells....? I don't quite understand it.....what's the point of it? Seems kinda dangerous, having to cut a hose open just to "tee it off"......can't the same process be used with a garden hose?
I know the box has directions to "back flush" "fill" and drain.....but just can't see the point.....previous vehicles I just used a garden hose to flush til clear, then a run with distilled water til closed loop......drain the distilled, then fill with 50/50.....
But since this car seems to be extremely neglected, I was contemplating the radiator flush.
