I have a question pertaining to the extended use of cooling system cleaners.
I have used Prestone and Peak cooling system cleaners both of which said to drain coolant then refill with water and add cooling system cleaner and run vehicle until warmed up & drain.
I have in the past run the cleaner for a day or two totaling 50 to 200 miles.
What harm if any can happen to an all cast iron engine or an iron & aluminum engine.

Thanks

Why do you think you need this? When flushing a cooling system you are basically just running pure water through for a bit and then replacing some of the water with pure coolant.

Unless there was some crazy contamination (improper coolant mixed in, oil mixing, etc), the system is closed and really shouldn't get too dirty. I just drained my car's 5 year old coolant this weekend and it actually looked fine.

i use a maintenance dose of schaeffers clean and cool, and things stay spotless.

I just purchased a 1999 Ford Escort and it appeared to be running hot this summer with the AC on. With 90K on it I decided to replace the timing belt, water pump & thermostat.
The water pump is driven by the cam belt so it was replaced for peace of mind.
I did not see any apparent issues but the coolant looked quite dirty and the construction of the radiator did not allow me to see if the core was dirty so I decided to run cooling system cleaner through it.
The cooling fan works fine, no mechanical issues found, so flushing the system was the next move.
Now back to my question;
Is there any harm in running the system cleaner it for a couple days?
Will it corrode the aluminum or do other damage??

Cleaners should only be used in neglected systems where there is obvious buildup of hard deposits. It sounds like your system qualifies.

The cleaner (citric acid) not only attacks rust and other hard particles, but it can attack the base material as well. If you leave it in too long, it'll perforate your radiator... too short and it won't clean well enough. It's a balancing act. I would follow directions.

Thanks for the info.
I just finished the process of draining & flushing the cooling system cleaner & refilled with 50/50.

My 88 dodge aries has some haze (possibly rust/sludge....?) in the bottom of the "recovery tank" or expansion bottle (non pressurized tank.....afaik) - it's almost the haze to the point where it's hard to see the coolant level in the reservoir tank......I was thinking of grabbing it with like a bottle cleaner and/or wire brush.....? But then there's the whole thing about that stuff floating around, circulating around my system.....

I've been contemplating running the Prestone Flush for a couple miles - i.e.: draining the coolant/antifreeze, adding the flush + plain water, and taking a stroll to the store (10 miles or so) then bringing the car home and draining it.

I know the bottle says to let the car idle until the thermostat gauge reaches the closed loop.....but would actually "driving" the car with the flush in there hurt anything?

I could understand with it in there a couple DAYS........cause the flush would be going from cold to hot multiple times, and probably not good, having too sludge (possible....though my radiator looks like brand new........just the expansion tank that looks dirty...) but I'm just thinking to and from the store, dumping it out, then filling it with plain old distilled water til clear, then driving with the clear water in there to get the remainder of the flush recirculated out, then a final drain, and fill with green 50/50....

BTW, anyone used the Prestone "Flush and Fill Kit" that some auto parts (and WM....) sells....? I don't quite understand it.....what's the point of it? Seems kinda dangerous, having to cut a hose open just to "tee it off"......can't the same process be used with a garden hose?

I know the box has directions to "back flush" "fill" and drain.....but just can't see the point.....previous vehicles I just used a garden hose to flush til clear, then a run with distilled water til closed loop......drain the distilled, then fill with 50/50.....

But since this car seems to be extremely neglected, I was contemplating the radiator flush.
