Gents, I have two questions. I've asked Exxon Mobil, and their inability to actually answer them is hilarious. So, I'd like y'all to take a crack at them:

1) Does Mobil 1 5W-30 Annual Protection, as is currently being sold, meet the Dexos1 Generation 2 specification?

2) Exxon Mobil makes a big deal about you NEED to change the oil at the 1 year mark. My Chevy Volt, if charged really often, will put a really low amount of miles on the engine over TWO years. GM says change the oil according to the OLM, but in no case should you let the oil stay in there for more than TWO years. The only requirements that GM puts on the oil is Dexos1 5W-30. Can I leave Mobil 1 5W-30 Annual Protection in for up to TWO years if the OLM says I can? (By the way, the OLM also keeps track of time, so it WILL flag the oil to be changed after no longer than TWO years.)

Just curious what y'all think?

Everything you're asking is frivolous.

#1.) There's nothing special about Dexos 1 Generation 2 oil. If you're using a name brand synthetic oil that is the proper weight, you're all good.
#2.) Follow your OLM. Nothing is gonna happen if you keep M1 AP in your car for two years if the gasoline engine is rarely used and the OLM says you still have oil life left.

As for #1, M1 5W30 AP is not presently listed as dexos1 Gen 2 certified. M1 and Mobil Super Syn 5W30s are on the list.

Just my opinion, but I think Gen 2 is a special thing if you have a DIT engine...especially one that has already been recalled for LSPI like mine. This is the first cert that tells us an oil has passed an LSPI mitigation test.

That may be. I'm not worried about Dexos G1 vs G2 for my Volt, because it's a non-turbo, non direct-injected engine. I'm more curious than anything else about this.

As for the 1 year vs. 2 years, the reason I'm asking this forum is because Exxon Mobil sent me an e-mail telling me that OLMs are notoriously inaccurate, and that I MUST change Annual Protection oil at least once a year. This makes absolutely no sense to me.

1) they should have been able to tel you the asnwer to that one.

2) I don't think you should've expected them to answer that one for you. Nobody except for M1s general counsel is going to put that in writing because all it does is open up a legal can of worms for them.

They're just covering their (rear ends)...I had one of their advisors tell me that a Mobil oil that is dual rated for gas and diesel would not be covered by their product warranty if I used it in my gas engine.
??????????

Personally I wouldn't waste my money on M1 annual protection. I would just get the EP and run it for two years in your car.

Regular M1 will easily go 2 years in low mileage applications. I went 5 years and 1800 miles in my big block Suburban and it was fine by the UOA.

+1 Same oil went two years many times in my seldom used 08 Crown Victoria.

These are humorous responses.
My guess is that XOM hasn't yet bothered to license their ten buck a quart flavor of M1 to the coming gen II dexos standard.
XOM also apparently thinks that you should change this ten dollar a quart oil after a year. After all, what does Chevy know about the application they designed, built and warrantied?

I wouldn't run M1 in any case, but that's just me. Pick your poison and go by the OLM

I've run decent conventional oil in a seldom used truck for up to 5 years at a time. If the engine seldom runs, who cares about the calendar ... What about show cars that sit for 99% of the time ... They could prolly be changed once a decade, and be fine

If they did not say to change to oil annually, it would not be 'annual' protection. Maybe they should change the name to bi-annual or tri-annual etc. As usual , it is just a marketing thing.

Which Mobil oil was this, if you don't mind me asking? The TDT 5W-40? I talked to one of their advisors a while back about which oil to use in our dad's truck since he tows a travel trailer around the country. I asked him about the 0W-40 European formula versus the TDT 5W-40. He recommended using the 5W-40 TDT in our dad's gas truck, and because he tows, not to exceed 10,000 miles between oil changes.
