I'm continuing in my quest for a deck boat, and I've found models from Hurricane and 4 Winns that fit the bill. Anyone have anything to say about the structural quality, ride, handling, and performance of the deck boat hulls from these companies?

I can't speak of the deck boats, but our Four Winns bow-rider hull is very well made and solid. Compared to a few of the other brands I looked at before settling on Four Winns, the hull material is thicker and the quality of the gel coat seems to be very good.

Four Winns have historically been one of the strongest hull manufacturers out there. With the new ownership, a recurring theme at FourWinns, hopefully that quality will carry forward.

Are you looking to buy new or used?

I own a FourWinns Sundowner, and it has been nothing but perfect for me. Very high quality build, they are not "cheap or inexpensive" boats though.

I'm looking used. I've got a shot at a 99 Four Winns, which is the boat that I really want. I've also located a Chaparral that looks to fit the bill. It has a 5.0 litre 250 or 260 horse engine going through what I think is a Bravo I drive. It looks clean and well kept in pics, and is described as in excellent shape.

Any thoughts on the hull of Chaparral deck boats, including performance? (quality of construction, ride, handling...)

Thanks! I really want the Four Winns, but we're about $1,000 apart, and I'm stretched to the max, at that. The Chaparall is a 99 as well, but is about $1,000 to 1500 below the deal on the Four Winns.

Who owns 4Winns now?

It looks like I'll be picking up the Four Winns with a 280hp Volvo 5.7Gi dual prop. Anyone have experience with this power package? It looks to be a sweet setup for this boat, and has only 56 hours on it.

Is the drive a 280/ 290 dp?
Those were built like tractors so dont worry if you find one
with em. We swedes was always amazed of the fact that drives needed rebuild when omc´s arrived...and that you actually had to change a merc drive even if you havent run into something.

I've seen and heard nothing but great things from Volvo marine. 4 Winns is a good boat. They are generally a lot heavier than other boats their size.

It is a 280hp TBI 5.7 Chevy with a Volvo Duoprop stern drive. I'm thrilled to hear this is a stout unit!

Only problem I have run into with Volvo units is that they always have the wrong anodes on them and they ALL drop their paint within the first few years....

Just use nW-40 HDEO...
I also used it in my 280 drive since
volvo recomended engine oil for it.
